I was wondering whether the description on the sides of people's posts that say stuff like "2nd place on the June VCS" became that way automatically or whether the users did that themselves? If it does come automatically till what place does it show (will it show up to 10th place or what)?

No, it isn't automatic, it's normally added to the custom title field by an admin for people who place from 1st place to 5th place.
