I didn't know MS was capable of infringement with Word. Good news is they'll still provide support for anything before the ban goes into effect. If that means anything to anyone.

But that will be crazy.
Not sure what they're actually getting banned for. But losing Microsoft word/Office would be a fairly major thing considering how most computers in the world would have it.

yeah, but it doesn't prevent people who have it from using it.

I honestly think the Microsoft should provide Word 2003 or 2007 for free until the ban is over and then require people to pay for the newest version again. If they can...

The dispute is over a patented invention related to customizing extensible markup language, or XML, a way of encoding data to exchange information among programs. Microsoft has called it an "obscure functionality".
I would have to agree on that, I doubt anyone really uses Word for its XML features.
Basically some tiny little company patented the system MS was using years ago and got awarded $290 million.
They probally knew MS was using it and waited till they could get a huge payout.

Anyway, it's only Word 2007 (and the office 2010 beta) that's affected, MS have recalled it and will re-release Office 07 next year without the XML function.
Office 2003 is better in my opinion anyway.
