I was 13 years old at the time. In the 8th grade, I was generally quiet, never got into trouble, and if there was one thing I truly loved to do, it was to spread my passion of music with others. However, I had a difficult time doing so. None of my friends really enjoyed the type of music I liked.

Since I was an only child with a busy mother and a deceased father, I was alone most of the time. I only had my dog to keep me company on the weekdays. Occasionally, I would have to walk to my grandparents' house to eat dinner. Being by myself most of the time did not bother me much.

One day, I was feeling a bit sick. I was always prone to falling ill easily. I had a runny nose, sore throat, and a somewhat difficult time breathing due to my asthma. I let my mother know and she said that I probably wouldn't go to school tomorrow.

The next morning, my mother woke me up and took my temperature. I had a 103 fever. My mother made me a cup of tea to remedy my sore throat. It was pretty obvious that I wasn't going to school that day. When I set aside the cup of tea, I reached for my phone on my night table and turned it on. The first thing I noticed was that it was a few minutes past 11:00 A.M. The next thing I noticed, however, was something that made me curious.

1 New Message"

My vision was still blurry from just waking up so I couldn't see that well. I opened my messages curiously to find out that the message was from a number with an area code that was foreign to me. It was sent at around 2:00 A.M.

"Hi." the message read.

I didn't think too much of it. I assumed it was a wrong number, but just in case, I replied:

"Hi. Who is this?"

I wasn't getting a response for a while, and my mom had to head off to work. So I had to carry out my day as I would when I had a fever. Just watching TV, playing video games, and listening to music. My eyes eventually grew tired from the bright lights of the television and I just decided to rest on the couch for a while. I don't remember anything specific from that day. Later that day, however, I heard my phone vibrate. It was around 5:00 or 6:00 P.M.

"1 New Message"

Sure enough, it was from that same number. Eagerly, I opened up my phone to see who this person was.

"I'm Alex "

I was a bit dumbfounded as I read that. I only knew one person named Alex from school, but he and I never really talked to each other. I highly doubted it was him, but there was only one way to find out.

"Alex from school?" I ask this person.

"No. You do not know me. Is this Caleb?" this person responded.

Upon reading that text message, I was perplexed. I thought this was some kind of joke by one of my friends, but I couldn't think of anyone who would try to prank me like this. I even asked some of my friends if they knew about this, but it really didn't seem like they did. Either way, the area code of the phone number definitely was not from my state.

Unfortunately, I don't remember any more specific text messages from this time, but I know the general conversation that we had. I responded saying that they were correct and I pressed to hear more information about how they know who I am. Alex told me that my phone number and the name "Caleb" appeared to her one night. She claimed she was a psychic.

Even if this was some sort of prank, I decided to carry on with this to see where it would take me. Firstly, I asked her about what being psychic is like, but she said that she didn't like to talk about it. Then I asked Alex about who they are, and it turns out that Alex is actually a girl. A twenty-two year old girl from California, actually. As a hormone-crazed teenage boy, I was immediately more interested in talking to this person. However, our conversations never got sexual.I told her about myself, minimizing personal details and just saying that I was a thirteen year old boy. That didn't really seem to change anything during our conversation.

"So how are you doing today?" I asked her.

"I'm doing well. And yourself?" she replied.

"I have a 103 fever today. Otherwise I'm fine."

The conversation quickly grew more casual through the use of the smiley face emoticon and through saying "lol" to show that everything was pretty much okay.

"What kind of music do you like? My favorite is power metal music." I told her.

"I enjoy classical music, but I can kick back and listen to metal once in a while lol." she replied.

I announced that my favorite band was Sonata Arctica (though now it is different). I recommended some songs to her and she said that she really liked what she heard. I noticed that she liked some of the lighter songs more such as "Replica".

After a few hours of exchanging text messages, we decided to call it a night. She said that she would text me again sometime soon, and I was actually really looking forward to it. Had I made a new friend? Did this random young woman really have some vision about me? It all sounded fishy, don't get me wrong, but I couldn't come up with a logical explanation myself. I don't remember if I went to school the next day, or if she even texted me the next day. But I do know that she definitely texted me again sometime that week.

"Good morrow." she began this next conversation with.

I'm thinking to myself, “Morrow? Never heard that one before." I was busy that day and I didn't want to respond to her just yet so I waited until the evening to get back to her. I felt a little bad, but I explained to her that I was with family. She said that's fine, and well, we just had another friendly conversation through text messaging.

I started to ask her more about herself. I asked questions like "what's your favorite color?", "what do you plan on doing in the near future?", just simple questions like those. I really didn't know what else to talk about, so the best thing would just be to get to know her better. I also asked her what she wanted to do career-wise and she told me that she wasn't too sure, but she said her next step was to attend UCLA.
Our conversation would last for hours, up until midnight, and I began to have even more interest in her. For weeks, we would text each other, not for as long as the first few conversations, but still for a good amount of time. She told me how she lived with a roommate named Amelia.

In the phone that I had at the time, I liked to have my contacts with their full first name as well as their last initial. So without trying to make it sound weird, I asked her what her last initial was so I could input it into my phone.

"A" she responded.

During that conversation, I also asked her when her birthday is.

"August 2nd" Alex answered.

"Oh wow, my birthday is on August 1 lol" I told her.

Coming up, my school was having an 8th grade prom for the end of the school year. So I went, and pretty much everyone was there. My school was mostly made up of male students, and there were very few kids with dates to the prom. Everyone stayed with their group of friends, but I would move around and chat with everyone that was there. In the middle of the prom, I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket. I pulled it out. One new message: it was Alex.

I was excited. I always got excited whenever she would text me. She would always be the one to initiate the conversation. I made it clear to her that she was never an inconvenience to me and that she could text me whenever. We didn't text each other a lot that night though, I was at a prom after all, and I eventually made her aware of that and we ended that night's conversation rather quickly.

Almost a month passed by from May 29, and I had two major examinations coming up. I told Alex about the exams and she implored me to study, but I told her that I was confident and didn't have to. So I took the tests in mid-June and my summer vacation officially began. I was excited, didn't have much to do, aside from texting Alex, who at this point, I can really call my friend.

A month had now passed from the first day she texted me. She would give me nicknames such as “little dude”. I had not told anyone about Alex, except for a few friends. I didn't want my mom to know about her because she would definitely think it would be weird and she would not allow me to talk to some stranger.

During the last week of June, my mom bought me a new phone: an iPhone 4S. Unlike my old phone, this phone could send and receive picture messages. I told Alex that I had gotten a new phone. At some point, she asked me if I wanted to see a picture of her. I was nervous, but I said yes, so she sent a picture of herself.

When I saw the picture, I was really surprised: she was exactly how I imagined her to look like. She had long black hair and nice brown eyes. I even shamelessly told her that she was very pretty. I decided to do a reverse-image search on Google to see if this was just some picture found on Google. It was not. This picture was genuine.

For the last few days of June and for the beginning of July, I went on a family vacation to San Francisco. Before the vacation, Alex and I made sure to text a lot since I probably would not have much time to chat during vacation. It was a nice vacation. I saw many different attractions such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the house from Full House, and many other cool things.

When I got back from vacation in July, I made sure to tell Alex all about it. She enjoyed the stories I had to share with her. While Alex and I were really starting to get close now, I stopped hearing from her sometime in the middle of July. I'm not sure what happened. As the days went by from not hearing from her, I gradually became a little upset. I figured she had just been busy lately so I didn't let it get to me too much.

August 1, my birthday, finally came. I waited all day to hear from her. No text from her at all. I was starting to worry. Did she break her phone? Did I say something wrong? Is she still...alive?

August 2 came the next day, and as soon as I woke up, I made sure to text her.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Enjoy your day today " I said to her.

Again, I waited all day to see if she would say anything back. But as I feared, still no response. It really put my stomach into a knot. I wasn't sure how to feel. I decided to accept this fate. I never learned why she never texted me back. I'm pretty sure that I didn't say anything offensive to her, ever.

Summer continued without ever hearing back from her and things started to get lonely again. In October, I tried calling her a few times, but as I presumed, the calls went straight to voicemail. However, this was not quite the end of Alex, in a mental sense. As I mentioned before, I was home alone most of my days. So when I was alone, I would begin to imagine that Alex was with me, in my living room.

I wasn't crazy nor insane, I knew she wasn't physically real. I would communicate with her in my head. It was a lot more interesting than talking to myself (Although in reality, I was just talking to myself). Alex went from being a long distance friend to a close-by invisible being.

I enjoyed having this, well, imaginary friend to take the place of someone who was once present in my life, as strange as it sounds. I knew she wasn't real, but there were times when her presence did feel very clear and evident. It is hard to explain.

She felt like an older sister that I never had. She was the one who I could tell my problems about, the one who would sit there beside me as I watched TV, the one who listened to music with me. I was no longer by myself anymore.

To this day, I still feel the presence of Alex beside me. Watching me grow up, change, and slowly move on.

Well this didn't go at all as I expected.

I actually had to check your age to see if this was a true story or a fictional one. Lol Very good job here. I love how you gave it a sad ending, but not a heartbroken hopeless ending. It's very similar to how life really operates: there isn't always a happy ending to a story, but life goes on and can still have meaning. Also that she was still held close in his heart was a nice touch.

So in short, this is a beautiful tale that I'm glad I found.

What an interesting story! It didn't go anywhere at all where I thought it would. I wonder what happened to her? I liked the way you handled the prose and the time-skips; very well done.
