I put this under the Society sub-forum because I'm looking mainly at the Society... This is a discussion on why the Police are being shot. What do those who serve do to earn the hate that is often given?

As I look at the news, I begin to see more and more hate turn into action against those they hate. But why? Is it because of Rappers who use constant hate for the Officers? Is it just a trend that has been increasing over the years? What is the reason behind all of this hate?

My opinion is that the trend is due to those who look to the Government, begin to dislike it, because the Government can't and won't deliver all that they want, therefore they begin to dislike them. Other contributing factors would include the place where most of this happens. Ferguson, the place where all of this hate exploded, released a monster of hate. This began tearing through the Nation, and now we are reaping the consequences of our actions... Do you agree?

Be respectful of others. If I see that this discussion gets too heated, I will ask the mods to close this immediately!

darthyoda : Purely speculation here, but I think that the way news stations do journalism is a huge contributing factor to misinformation which causes anger and leads to violence. The way news media presents stories and "evidence" for both sides of any conflict without sating an opinion or statement about which is true makes both the cop and anti-cop side seem to have equal evidence and therefore an equal likelihood of either side being correct. However the cop side is presented as someone just reading a statement whereas the anti-cop side is generally an interview. Because you can see the person arguing the anti-cop side and not on the side for the cops the anti-cop side gets trusted more easily and it is possible to empathize with them. By putting a face on people who "suffer" because of cops and giving no face to cops the news media actually cultivates hatred for cops.

I agree with tiropat. It is a lot to do with coverage. You don't get a news story when cops do their jobs properly. You get a news story when a cop kills someone while on duty. Cops doing their job and having nothing out of the ordinary happen isn't "newsworthy".

Tiropat beat me to it for some of what I wanted to say. I'd also like to add that the media not only causes more cop shootings, but exaggerates them as well. I'm sure cops get shot all the time no matter where you go. Lately, however, shootings involving police officers are the "big thing" on the news. So naturally, they're going to report every single one that they can get their hands on. Things we wouldn't have even noticed or cared about before suddenly become these huge stories because the news knows that it can make more money off of them.

Why? Because they basically have no accountability. When was the last time a policeman anywhere was found guilty of murder?

I can imagine that in the heat of action it can be hard to make rational decisions. But if the police didn't try to regulate so much of our lives (War on Drugs, anyone?), then such split-second decisions would occur less often.

Also, policemen are too often tax collectors by setting speed traps, or worse with civil asset forfeiture by preying on clueless citizens and threatening them with arrest unless they give them money
