If you follow this theory, there are 8 Links. It is unknown whether the Links in FS & FSA are the same & it is possible, however not confirmed, that the Links in ALttP, LA, OoA, & OoS could be the same due to similarities in the games. It is also possible(even less so) that the Link from OoA/OoS could actually be the Hero of Time from the Adult ending of OoT as the Link in those games starts off as a hero already. I don't know how that would work though, since the adult Link was sent back in time.

I'd have to say the one from TWW/PH.

He shows a lot of personality & I love his look of sheer terror when he's being launched from the barrel on Tetra's ship.

My guess would be the combination of cliché, "You are the chosen one" story with the personality & ability to identify with the characters. It's just the way this particular "chosen one" story is told. The fact that some people consider Link to be cute & Zelda to be pretty probably helps a little. Zelda also isn't as helpless as a princess that keeps a garden of mushrooms. Plus the slightly darker theme in comparison to the stories of Mario makes it a bit closer to real life & therefore more able to identify with better than sliding down a pipe to squash a turtle.

They've also gotten away with the games because legends do tend to get changed slightly as they pass from generation to generation so a retelling of the same story is always possible.

My mom got me hooked on the Zelda series. The Legend of Zelda was my first game & I've been hooked ever since. I just enjoyed playing the game when I was younger since I wasn't really old enough to understand the story. As I got older, I enjoyed the story more & I liked to imagine living in Hyrule I suppose. I know I liked the pointy ears. Anywho, it's always been my favorite series.

Aside from Ganon, my vote for creepiest boss would have to go for Bongo Bongo. With both of his hands & head being cut off, I find that creepy. The theories about his origin are pretty creepy as well.
