I don't think this will stack up with too many others but to me it is a great new years story and it is all true. This happened to me about twenty some odd years ago. I was 19 at the time and on the road working as the go-for-guy with a construction crew.
Now to set this up for you to fully understand I have to step out of the story for a minute to throw some past details at you that will matter in the story later. Up to this point ( from the age of 15 ) the only people in my family that I had anything to do with was my next to the youngest brother and my mother. Due to some major issues suffered during the summer of my 15th birthday between my split family pretty much blasted my family apart. We no longer got together for holidays, never visited, nor did we speak in person or on the phone. No letters ... etc... I had been rotating between living in my car, old abandon houses, tent in the woods, and a few less liked places. I would take baths in the local rivers and use the laundry-mat to take care of my clothes. Half of the time eating whatever animal I could hunt down, scrounge up veggie or fruit wise, and bread I would splurge on to add to the meal. The other half of the time I would just go with whatever cheap fast food I could get.
Ok now back to the story .... The crew I was working with had just finished a job putting up a big set up of storage units to rent for a guy near his motel. This job took place near Orlando, Fla.
Anyways we got back home to Georgia for a short 3 day break before we were to take off and go to a bigger job in Alaska. I remember I got home and as soon as I stepped in the door , to a rare splurged on motel room, I was getting a call from someone. I answered the phone and was totally surprised to hear my grandmother's voice on the other end. She told me she had got my number from my mother. She asked me the normal stuff like : how's life been treating you, are you eating well, are you taking care of yourself, etc... What she said next tho totally floored me. We've got most of the immediate family together to do a special holiday get together like we used to and we would like you to come to it too. I agreed and told her that I would come. She said she loved me and missed me. So on night number 2 it turned out to be new years and the night of the get together. Everyone brought something and everyone also brought a token late Christmas gift ( a brain storm by my mother who was not thinking how awkward it would be ). Anyways to shorten this up a bit we hurried through the gifts and enjoyed the dinner. Well the guys and some of the gals decided to go to the local bar to celebrate more fully with alcohol, weed, and whatever other preferences some others may have had at the time. Well things were going somewhat verbally tense for an hour or so there between the family. Till one guy who was sitting with some biker wanna-bees stood up and followed my oldest niece outside and decided to get a feel using her. Well all hell broke loose in the bar, well after he came in to sit down, when a teary eyed niece came in to tell us what happened. We beat the hell out of them and busted the bar up like you wouldn't believe in the ensuing brawl. Spent 3 days in jail, lost my job, had my car towed, had to pay a portion of the repairs for the bar, and the hospital bill of one of the bars' bouncers ( one I mistook for one of the morons we were fighting ) . Now one would think that would be a horrible new years but to me it was the best because we were together as a family for the first time in many a few years. Also for the simple fact that we kicked butt as a family ... instead of trying to kick each others' butt.
