 I'd recommend Fire Emblem. I've never played it myself but I've heard that it's a really great strategy RPG series. The story, as I've heard, is great, and I am anticipating for the day when I actually decide to play it for once.

Well it depends on your preferred type .. for example : fantasy ( dragons, elves, dwarves, etc... ), sci-fi ( ships, foot soldiers, guns, etc.. ), and do you want newer or oldies but goodies ? Strictly speaking from your suggested genres I would recommend Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, Gemfire, Onimusha Tactics, Ogre Battle ( and Ogre Tactics ), and Persona.
Now if you wanna go strictly rpg then I can recommend a lot more to play but I wanted to keep the list down. There are several hundreds of good games in those genres to play. Good luck in your game search. Hope this helps you out.
