I hear it's ridiculously easy in comparison, you are given the opportunity to get at least 1UP per level and it usually more. (iirc you can get 6 or 7 in the first castle) 
 
I remember beating the NES version of SMB 3, and It was pretty difficult the first time, (partually because it was on a keyboard, but that's beside the point) 
 

So the answer would be no, it's a lot easier in comparison.
