Pretty much every person who has been on the Internet for a decent amount of time has had to face cyberbullying - whether it was from a troll, flamer, or just a jerk in general. Lately I've seen many articles and the like (and even a movie) about the horrible impacts cyberbullying has had on people. Personally, I think physical bullying is more important, and we should focus our attention on that. If people can't handle insults from random strangers on the Internet, then they shouldn't be on there in the first place. In fact, they should really talk to their parents about seeing a counselor about their insecurities, because if you can get upset over something like that, then you won't be able to face the real world.

My opinion aside, I would like to know your own opinions. Is cyberbullying really bad, or should it be considered normal? Should we put more or less effort into "stopping" cyberbullying? If we put more, do you think it'll have any effect?

Cyber Bullying is very bad it is not just trolling, spamming or flaming an other person. What some Cyber Bullies do is hack into peoples accounts (like facebook steal photos and post them all over the web. They also do what you said and that is troll and spam. They can also make fake photos and spread it all over the web. It can really ruin a young person's life. There have been cases were people were hacked and had fake photos that were vulgar posted on websites. They ended up taking their life. A few years ago a teenager took her life when a student created a fake account pretending to be a guy who had a crush, they hacked and got her photos, but said nasty things. So yeah Cyber Bullying is a huge problem

To be honest we should be focusing on both physical and cyber because both have very bad consequences. Both can ruin a person.

Cyber bullying kills me.  There's this big red X in the top right hand corner of the screen that lets you close a page.  Also, kids nowadays are soft.  You can't take an insult or two?  Did no one teach people how to filter comments and decide what's right and what's wrong?

I think all the self-esteem stuff we have to do with kids makes them completely incapable of handling negativity, criticism, or verbal/written attacks.  Instead of reacting in a manner that allows them to separate themselves from the situation, they react rashly.  I hear about suicide over Facebook posts and i'm stunned and baffled.

I blame parents and our society for not equipping kids to react to negativity.  They're never exposed to failure and they can't handle it.

Have I been flamed, attacked, and all that online?  Yes.  Anonymity makes people say a lot of mean things.  Have I ever been cyber bullied?  No.  I never have and I never will.  I can conceptualize negativity, especially on the internet.

We should think about conflict resolution more than just stopping bullies.  You don't magically escape bullying when you get out of high school.  It continues through college and the work place.  Work on the skills to handle others and you'll be just fine.

tornadocam : Hacking into people's accounts and the like can lead to physical bullying, and that, by all means, needs to be stopped. However, other than that, I don't think people need to go to the extremes like suicide to resolve these problems, and if they do, then they have some underlying conditions to start with (insecurity about themselves, etc.). So in my opinion, unless you're being bullied and picked on by every kid at school (especially if it gets physical), then your life isn't going to be ruined.

warmaker : I completely agree - kids these days just can't handle insults. I understand if it's a bunch of people doing it ALL THE TIME, or if they're pushing you into lockers and tripping you in the hallway, but if they're just making fun of you, then you just need to laugh at yourself until they shut up and go away (worked for me). Rather than being taught to just "ignore" bullies or report them, we need to teach them how to defend themselves, both physically and mentally.

Cyber-bulling is just as bad as actual bullying, even though it is not in person, it can still cause problems. Personally, i think we should cyber bulling just as much as real bullying. because it is a big problem just like bullying in person., and it can affect people negatively

For some people the Internet is more real than the outside world. Cyberbullying couldn't happen to me because I don't tend to communicate with people I don't know.
Vizzed is about the only exception.
But you can only really be bullied if you allow it. If you stop caring then its just someone trolling.
There's really no point in paying any head, its like trying to eat soup with chopsticks. Your never going to get anywhere. When you think of the reality its really pretty trivial.
That mean comment is just a few bits of data on a hard drive miles away. All the pictures and colours are just illusions, none of it is real.

warmaker : Exactly this.

Like, literally, if you are getting cyberbullying, turn off the computer. Simple as that. Or just come back a later time. Simple as that. People are pretty sensitive, but I also feel that insults can cause a great deal of damage to a person, especially to kids.
Plus, if someone is on the internet, it's because they want to, cyberbullying is still pretty bad, but not nearly as bad as real life bullying.

Well I am of a mixed opinion here. Cyber bullying is very bad but at the same time it is very easy to avoid or ignore. Unlike a bully in your face physically harassing you. Here's a small stat for you concerning this : About one third (32 percent) of all teenagers who use the Internet say they have been targets of cyber bullying. Where the real problem with cyber bullying really cranks up is when they get ahold of your personal information. Then it goes beyond cyber bullying into just down right stalking and bullying. I've seen plenty of horror stories about it and also seen a lot of happy endings where the bully got busted. To elaborate on my answer ( which was yes cyberbullying is that bad ) the main problem I see is the child not knowing what to do in the situation. I know as a teen I would have just told the person to grow up and either put them on ignore or just left the site till I could get someone to take care of the issue. Bad part is most children have to learn a large amount of things when they get online and most of that is usually taught by people they do not know on the internet or know by simple acquaintance. Parents on the other hand just throw the kids into it thinking they will have fun, meet and make good friends, and learn a lot. If the parents do not explain to kids what cyber bullying is, why it is wrong, and what will happen if the kids engage in cyber bullying, and enforce the consequences if the rules are broken. It can be difficult to accept if you find out your child has been a bully online, but by enforcing the rules it will help them develop better online behaviors. Encourage kids to come to tell an adult if they ever see cyber bullying, either as a victim or a bystander, and help stop cyber bullying by never passing it on. Help kids to be Internet safety savvy. They should know, especially, that they can't trust that a person online is who they seem to be so they should only share personal information in person and that they shouldn't share their passwords with anyone except their parents. They should also understand that anything they post online or send through a cell phone may resurface later, so they should not post or send pictures or messages they would not want everyone in the world to see, perhaps even years later. Parents should have access to all of their kid's accounts, and their kids should know that their parents may check occasionally to make sure their online activities are safe. It is also a good idea to keep computers in a busy area of the house, and out of bedrooms, and parents may also want to have a rule that cell phones must be turned off at certain times. like at night. Though kids do need some privacy, they should understand there is no guarantee of privacy online, and their parents have the responsibility to keep their kids safe. Let kids know that no one deserves to be bullied, and if they are ever the victim reassure them that it is not their fault that they were bullied. I know that I went off a bit and talked a lot but to me cyber bullying can be as bad if not worse than a physical in your face bully because they are anonymous and could be anyone.

Latimew :

I'd say cyber-bullying and IRL bullying are about the same - the problem is that people tend to neglect cyber-bullying as bad simply because "it's the internet" - people also don't pay as much attention to their actions on line because the lack of perceived real-life consequence makes them lose their judgment - kind of like being drunk does. People online act a lot like a bunch of drunk mofos a lot of the time.

Keep in mind that "bullying" goes beyond simple insults and usually refers to constant harassment targeted at a specific person. I've seen some pretty awful examples of cyberbullying that go beyond just "trolling" (such as searching out a person's address online and making death threats against them and their family).

How I view it, with cyber-bulling, it's just like bulling in real life, how I look at it, these cyber bullies don't really have the guts to even show themselves to the people that wants to be themselves. I know a few people that all bully others because they don't like the person because they are interested in, like for an example, we all know a few series here and there that people loves, and the victims all end up killing themselves because they keep getting picked on because they like something that is meant for little kids or meant for girls.

So, my point of view, picking on someone online because they like something you disagree with is wrong in all kinds of levels, the right thing to do is just ignore them, let them like what they want to like, and don't force them to change to something you like, because that will affect you twice as much.

I'm going to say that cyberbullying leads to Bullying IN real life. Cyberbullying leads up to real life things catching up to you.

Yes you can close the computer and yes you can delete the text message and yes you can ignore the video. But then you come to school and they all heckle you on the way to class and whisper about you and get in your face because of a video someone took of you and posted without your knowledge and they all believe what is on that video.

Yes you can delete that text message Natalie sent throughout the school saying that you are gay. But then you get to school and get beaten up in the locker room by the guys or girls because they think you deserve it.

Yes you can ignore that first call that they make to your cell phone with intentions to just keep calling you a whore because they believe you stole their boyfriend. But then they call the house phone constantly so you have to now unplug the house phone. To find out they waiting outside to teach you a lesson that you don't need to be taught because of some stupid rumor they made up about you stealing a boyfriend.

Yes you can just not go online at all to avoid the rumors being spread about how you slept with the boss to get the raise. But then you find out you were wrongly fired by your job due to such rumors.

You can easily go about your life ignoring the fact that a fake picture of you molesting someone is being circulated on all the news sites. But then you are recognised on the street and confronted by angry people about the supposed molestation you committed, your kicked out of restaurants and are mobbed by new reporters, you can't even eat at home because someone is peaking through your window taking a picture of you to make another story out of you.

what I'm getting at is that Cyberbullying, though I used very aggressive situations, can in fact lead to very harrowing physical situations. You may be able to not give a buck about anything people say about you and are strong minded and everything. You can't keep it up like that if people take it to the next level and bring it about face right up to you.

I also relate gossiping to cyberbullying. Before there was cyberbullying there was gossip. Yes we do it in everyday life. I admit to doing it without thinking. So I am just a guilty as the rest. But both are the same. Both affect people whether good or bad and can lead to very real good or bad consequences.

Latimew : Cyber Bullying is bad, but bullying in real life is a lot worse. You see, there are many different types of bullying, not just the physical one. No one cyber bullied me before.

tornadocam : I agree with everything you've said on your post.

Now, where were we? Ah yeah, cyber bullying topic. For example, let's just say you're in a class, and every student has an Instagram account. A student, whoever he/she is, hacks your account and posts inappropriate pictures. You get banned from Instagram. This ruined your Instagram life. If someone cyber bullies you, just report them to the staff or close your computer. It's not difficult.  Also, to be honest, I think cyber bullying is the dumbest type of bullying. Sorry if I sounded rude, but just sharing my opinion. Like I said, you can simply close your computer. Simple.

I... have actually been a victim of both physical bullying and cyber bullying, and I can tell you that from my experience, the only difference between the two is how much your body hurts afterward. Cyber bullying doesn't leave bruises, but it has just as much upset mentally as physical, real-life bullying, and it can be just as damaging, if not more so, at times, because over the internet it takes a LOT more to get the bullying STOPPED.

People say 'it's not that difficult' to stop it, just report them or close your computer' (using your comment, greenluigi: as the example, just for instances' sake)  but no, it's REALLY more difficult than that. You get someone bullying you online, it pretty much drives you from the site they're on. If they're determined, they'll follow you to other sites and start the cycle all over again, until you have to avoid EVERYTHING until site staff decide to take action, if they EVER do. Been there, done that, had death threats and was terrified for WEEKS.

So no, it's not less than physical bullying, it's not that kids today can't take insults, it's that over the internet, bullies think that they can hide behind their anonymity and thus the bullying gets WORSE and more dangerous mentally than it typically does in real life. Yeah, they can't punch you or pick you up and slam your head against the wall over the internet, but they can threaten your life, threaten the lives of those you love, and give you evidence that you are being STALKED over the internet, and that is just as damaging.

I have been a victim of bullying from K to 11 (that where it stops in Quebec). I was tall enough to be safe physically but I was constantly called names and it was very hard.

I can't talk about cyberbullying, but I do believe that modern technology can decrease its impact. You can put bullies' email in the spam filter (unless he/she knows a way around it...) or block them on social network. I saves so much time.

Cyberbullying is taken way too seriously in my opinion. I think the reason why people care is because kids these days practically live their lives on their phones. (I am a kid by the way) You see that power button? Press it. Bullying in real life is much more important. That is where you can't control what happens. You can't "block" someone in real life... Now, some times it's no longer even "Cyberbullying" and becomes assault. You know where some one on the internet posts sexual pictures of someone, like what happened to Amanda Todd? We need to stop referring to that as cyberbullying. We need to call it what is, sexual assault.

Latimew : Physical bulling is bad that is true but that is only in a small area between you and the bully in some cases cyber bullies do things that embarrass a person on a global scale not only does this make the victim embarrassed it also makes them afraid to show there faces anywhere due to the global scale humiliation. But some bullies don't do that they like to make fun of you in private messages so you are never truly safe whether it be in real life or online. To add to this imagine how much kids like myself feel being harassed on a place that is supposed to be used to stay in touch with friends or share funny stories. It makes most paranoid and fearing to go on there it may even lead some kids to preform a action that is not nessesary (you know what I mean). So cyber bullying is as bad as physical bullying at least in my eyes it is. It make we wonder why there is so much hate in this world we live in I wish it could be nice but that will never happen at least not to everyone. We can only ignore the hate and pretend it is not there but the worst thing you could do is let it in. So you say that it is taken to seriously my answer to that question it is just as important as physical bullying because where that hurts your body cyber bullying hurts your mind.
