oI've ALWAYS thought graphics DO NOT make a game, but simply improve it. Yes, a game with good graphics would be seen as "better" to some people, but to me, Games are more than just graphics. There are many elements to a game, Music, Characters, Story, Gameplay, ect. So I think people who decide if a game is good solely on it's graphics really need to re-define what a good game really is.

Although, I agree, good graphics do help improve the game.

Graphics help, but I always play a game for its story. It just bugs me when people say a game is not good because it does not have good graphics. If I really cared about graphics, would I be on a retro game site? :p

graphics do not make or break the game. they are the icing on the top of the cake. if the graphics were removed from say any next gen game and replace them with pixels, or the diffrent N64 polygonal graphics, i would not think "this game is awful," its still the same game, regardless of the graphics. the important parts of a game is the story, the characters, and if its even fun. if its fun, nothing else matters.

do grapcis make a game? No!!!!!!!!! just because it has good grapics does not mean the story line is good and it is fun. that's what matters

Graphics are FAR from a priority for me. I hate the games we have now. They're ALL graphics and hardly any plot implemented in with about 3 hours of game time because the graphics are so ramped up. Storyline, and strategic challenge is priority for me (: I can have fun with games in 8 bit still for hours.

I personally can't play a game with terrible graphics for more than 20 minutes.
There is still terrible games that have awesome graphics, but plenty of games with awesome graphics are awesome.
And yes I would have to say for me, graphics do make a game better.

It's a big no because obviously there are tons of people that come here for the old games they like. Of course good graphics can enhance a more movie like gameplay which makes the experience very fun and a good game. But it's substance more so than looks.

I don't really think so. Sure, good graphics make the player want to play more, but if the gameplay sucks, than it's worthless. For instance, take into account G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. The graphics on there are beautiful. The gameplay, however, bring it down below average, and it's advised to not play it, the risk being a waste of money. Overall, graphics are good, but they're not the only thing you need to take into account.

Only to a certain extent do graphics make the game.
Obviously a pretty picture is pleasing to the eyes, but a great story, brilliant gameplay, and a challenge are all more important in most cases.
I mean look at Tetris. It is probally one of the greatest games of all time (seriously, it's on every platform and everyone has played it) and it's just stacking different shaped blocks.
Anything else in Tetris like colors or backgrounds are secondary.

There are a few cases where good graphics turn an ok game into a great game, but the game would still be good with 8bit graphics for example.

Definitely not. Some of my favorite games are older games from the 64, SNES, NES, and even GameBoy, such as The Legend of Zelda games, Mario Kart, Ogre Battle, Excitebike, Megaman, Tecmo Bowl, and Pokemon (which I have recently got back into for some reason)

I think that graphics can have a serious effect on a game. It's the little things that make me happy as a gamer, when you can see that careful attention was paid to subtle aspects, like how something is animated very well. While its not the defining factor, bad graphics can really distract from amazing narrative and gameplay. There are plenty of great games with "terrible" graphics and terrible games with great graphics, its just one aspect but it is a meaningful one.

Graphics are a constantly changing thing. The game's content is what matters. Content is the heart of games. A video game can have a pretty face but be dull as hell.

Definately not, I grew up with like the Mega Drive, then PS then PS2 then 360, and of all the consoles my favourite games thin out into the newer gens.

Mega Drive, you have the sonic games, super hang on, golden axe, streets of rage, batman and tons more of awesome old gems.

Playstaion has the best of the FF games, Resident Evils were better on the PS, Dino Crisis etc

PS2 Kingdom Hearts2, Shadow of the Collosus, God Hand etc...

360: Hmm Resi 5 was alright, Prototype is probably the one game I'd say is awesome. Most the newer games I find over rated.

I guess the more realistic it gets the less I enjoy a game I guess.

I don't care for graphics. i much more prefere style over the look of the game. for instances, shadow of the collosus and Okami. on a technicle standpoint, not the greatest but the styles they both have, both feeling as if your looking at a painting in motion, makes the world feel more alive then grand theft auto or uncharted, both having great graphics but not that great style. granted both still good games.

at the end of the day though, gameplay is what matters most, the story/characters, and style of the game.

if graphics made a game then that would mean that most of the old games would be terrible an all of classics we all know and love would be absoultuly terrible games so i say no graphics does not make the game

well when it comes to shooters yes graphics make the game better i do beleive id want to play halo3 as opposed to some s*** like...Hmm...Hexen, or Heretic II...given that they flippin great but for their time only were they TOP of the line...and now you can play games like Doom and Duke nukem ONLINE as FLASH GAMES...and just look at the Halo setup, or Call of Duty..effing fantastic BECAUSE of graphic play...shooters need good imagery...now lets back track, effin nothing beats Link to the Past in my book, the story, the game play,the GRAPHICS...were wonderful just well put together and rounded it simply looked good no doubt about it..pokemon yellow didnt have s*** for imagery nor did dragon warrior when that s*** started and personaly nearly everyone in my school back then was allllll about some effin pokemon, carrying around their pockets or colors itching raise the levels or catch a certain lil monster...its really all about where your from and what kind of game play you truely enjoy, so its a personal battle....older peeps like myself in our mid twenties really know where the game industry has come from and need not require super badass graphics based on the fact that we were there when it CAME OUT...83 mario, still play that s*** on my advance...younger kids will say thats lame or f*** that s*** i got a ps3 or a WII...which you can only appreciate while baked outta your mind...(just an opinion)i like all games that can hold my attention and /or piss me off enough to desire the win lol long story short and point inside.....games are meant to be played so enjoy them young and old...thats the only difference olds graphics, new graphics...their still for entertainment!!!!
