See, I would be curious to know how that's been "proven" and whether or not it's reffering to the child as an adult or just as an older child or teenager.
Studies of these natures are always biased in one way or another and are circumstantial at best as it is based off individual opinion.
But in any case, 5% is not a large number at all.
Books, movies and the internet probally have higher percentages and would counterbalance any (imaginary) negative affects games might have.
I think games have a more positive affect then negative, they can encourage growth in imagination and curiosity, help with reading and numbers and improve hand to eye coordination.
Other studies have proven that last one.

well, I think video games like most everything else in life is all about moderation. If you put too much emphasis on any 1 thing in life then everything else goes out of balance and it messes your life up in some way.

And I'm not sure how you prove that something like video games affect at least 5%.....

video games can't have an equal effect over different people. I know I have played 10 times more video games than some other people I grew up with so it makes little sense that the 5% would apply to both of us.

When then safes should make a math test and a key code so that kids who go crazy over halo 3 won't answer that question ( you understand , right ? ) .

This case is like saying kids don't know anything but press Z or R twice , No not even that , they don't even care about old games because they say "THE GRAPHICZ SUCK , THIS GAME IS SUCKZ ! " (what I am saying here is that they won't play the N64) .

And becuase of those people , I think using that same brain they think "ZOMG Thiz gamez awsome becaes*kid dunno how to spell because* of REALTIC grapics " .

Also I wonder if they do play spore , are they going to just go into the sporecast and pick anything they like ?

I am talking about the kids that cry everytime they get pwn in anything (heres one video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sL90fCgOrcE (NOTE: he dools or something near the end of the video and his sliva cames out ) .

Games are suppose to be a fun , not a crying , hard , need to win or else end of the world , thing .

I want hard , near impossble to beat games again , that will train them , because if you rember the old days , where you all played sonic or mario with your friends , that didn't turn us into big blubbering babies , it made you all more skillful , making it easy to beat any next gen game (due to how hard both the games are ) .

If you don't like the game , then don't play .

P.S: sorry about video (If its like ads or something ) but it just the best exmple I can find .

P.P.S : Also if there's someone with a shot gun , shoot while running backwards .

P.P.P.S : I rember a time when some of my friends came to my house , then need my help most of the time , again easy game made hard due to not playing hard games often (and it's mirror edge on normal , I mean come on ) .

I think that quote right there just about sums it up.

And I love that by the way. I admit I used to be one of those kids. I still listen to the music... but I've given up the other aspects.

I think it does affect kids, in that some games will make them more angry and they lash out and scream a lot more, and don't understand what respect means. They get a sense of self entitlement, that everything belongs to them and that other people don't matter. But there's also games that make you smarter, such as RTS games, because they actually require you to think instead of just beating up prostitutes. It mostly comes down to the kids though, and how easily influenced s/he is.

Well it all depends on the game there playing and I think it also reflects on the parents too. Your nine year old son showed be playing Grand Theft Auto, picking up hookers, and screwing them in his car. Stuff like that does have an impact on a child so really it depends on what the kids are playing and the parents supervision of what there kid is playing...... CHECK OUT MY DRAGON EGG, CLICK HIM, IT WILL HELP HIM HATCH-------------->

Can children still play videogames? Yes they can. Something like Little Big Planet for the PS3 or NintenDogs for the DS. If there is proper control for what type of game the child is playing, then there is nothing to worry about.

What do you guys think about this topic?
i think that what you are saying is crazy talk. if a child plays gta and thinks its okay to reenact things he did on the game that shows he was raised up horribly. if anything i think video games are great learning tools. i basically learned how to drive from gta, ive been driving for 2 years now and i havent ran over one pedestrian

ehh, it alright if you kinda limit the usage because too much violence could lead to massacres, emo, or suicide. Once they get to 10, it's perfectly okay because if you are a good parent, that means that they know whats right and wrong.

Oh yes. First off, we are debating this topic on a site partially dedicated to gaming, so that should be a clue to you. We wouldn't be discussing this on this site if there wasn't gaming (at least, I wouldn't).
Still, oh yes. Have you ever seen the videos on youtube where five year olds play Call of Duty? They are cursing and gunning down people like there is no tomorrow, and if they eventually rule the planet, there will be no tomorrow. Children have soft, squishy, easily impacted minds (I know, being one myself). Small things that they don't even notice can change the way they look. For some of the older people on this site, think of when you were first introduced to curse words. Did someone sit you down and teach you all of them or did you learn them from society? It's kind of the same with video games. You don't consciously know what you are seeing, but you subconsciously remember everything.

Yeah, if you don't have an older brother/sister, you are NOT gonna get an M rated game. But if you do, you might corrupt yourself, since GTA 3 was the game that really corrupted some people and Games that have nudity had people REALLY wanting to buy it.

To say they don't affect people at all is naive, but it takes a lot more than video games to define a person. Also, who's to say there can't be a positive impact? Not all games are like Grand Theft Auto.
