I just found some gum that I forgot I had. I started chewing a piece and then I looked at the expiration date. September 2012. Oops. Is it ok to chew it? Am I going to like die or something? I mean it tastes fine and it looks fine. It had never been opened (The pack was still in the plastic and everything) and it was not stored in a damp area. Should I spit it out and throw it away? Or is it safe to chew? I really don't want to throw it away because it is a flavor that was discontinued and it is one of my favorite flavors.

I highly doubt an expiration date on something like gum is going to matter.  Much less hospitalize you.

But then again, I don't pay a whole lot of mind to expiration dates, which my husband absolutely hates.  He lives and dies by them.

Because it is expired, I'd advise against it, but in the conditions listed, it should be fine. And gum is a "food" that has a long shelf life (like peanut butter), so whatever, just finish the pack soon.

Anyway, I would say no, I learned my lesson from eating expired candy: it made me very sick and I threw up everywhere lol. The candy was 2 or 3 years old I think...

Honey has an expiration date, yet it's been proven that honey's shelf life is FOREVER! So yeah I'm guessing gum and all it's preservatives will be ok, the expiration dates are often inaccurate anyways.

In my opinion, I wouldn't take any chances. I probably would have thrown it away, especially if its that long expired. But the way you described it, "it tastes fine, it looks fine" I wouldn't worry too much about it. I seriously doubt that you'll die from it, and I really can't blame you if it was one of your favorite flavors, especially if its been discontinued. Just whatever you do, don't accidentally swallow it. Your stomach may immediately reject something like that (as Matthew described in the previous post XD). Next time, I would do the safe thing and throw it away, and spend the extra 2-3 bucks and try and get a similar kind of chewing gum.

Was it even a use by date or best before date? Best before dates have no bearing on product safety.
Iv eaten outdated bread, crisps, drinks, jams etc. The only things that shouldnt be eaten past their dates are things containing egg or meat really.
