My friend has been laid off.

She really needs a job, but does not know where to look.

Yes, we have done the classifieds and the papers, even online.

But by the time you apply a thousand have already (we have been told)

Where are the unusual places you have looked for work, the different and unusual places that work.

God bless you if you can help this person back on the path.

For starters if your friend has been laid off they should look into receiving unemployment checks and such. But there are many places you can go to when looking for work, you can try temp agencies your state (assuming you live in the states) should have a department of labor and you can either check them out online or go to there in person but they have job listings. You can try looking around on craigslist and the likes. Does she have any friends who can put in a good word for her at their own work? Word of mouth really helps you out in the long run when looking for work. There are also job fairs hosted locally that she may be able to check out.

I've always thought that the best way to look for work (when it's hard to find) is in person. If jobs are plentiful online, go for it.... otherwise, I'd walk around the neighborhood.  It might be easier to find establishments that need work  if you find new businesses, for example.   And if there's a college campus nearby, those seem to have an endless supply of jobs.... whether they be at the bookstore, the cafeteria, or even in an office.

I haven't had to look for a job in a while, but if I got laid off like your friend has, I would first talk to family members. Yeah, you can look online at the various job websites, but like you said, a thousand people could be applying for the same job you are at the same time. I would think it would be the same way if you looked in the paper, too. If I was in your friend's shoes, I'd look to my friends and family. I keep overhearing these things that people say...the most popular one being "you have to know somebody on the inside" or something similar. I would talk to other family members or friends that have jobs to see if they have any openings where they're working.

A few words of advice.

Have your resume geared towards all of the ways you can benefit within the company and the position you are applying for, instead of having that general resume you hand out to everyone.

Also, hand in your resume to a place, even if they arent looking at the moment, that way, you will be one of the first resumes that get looked at when an opening does come up.

Go into the office itself, or whatever the job is, and talk to some people and be memorable. Tell them you are hoping to work for the company sometime in the future and you are looking to get a feel of the office environment.

It is the little things like that that make you stand out from the rest. I wish your friend luck in finding a job, It isnt easy to find a job anymore unfortunately. Best of luck.

I usually look on Craigslist, Snag a job, the online Newspaper's classifieds, and then just using a search engine. Usually, I put " jobs near me " or " jobs in [ insert city here ] . "
