I recently found a video on YouTube showing how powerful the NES sound chip might actually be! If the system had a longer life cycle could things like this be more common? Put your opinions and answers here!I honestly never heard any long audio samples like this ever on NES and thought this is amazing!I'll provide a link to the video below which in the description has a link to the ROM download if you want to try it out yourself.

No way!....this must be a lie....it can't....I just.......can't accept this........

Really, just....wow........and here we are, people are making fun of the Nintendo's NES 8-bit sound chip.....this just proves that game engine doesn't matter when a REAL programmer comes into play (like the astounding sweet home in NES, seriously.....that game is just too advanced to be in NES.....)

saldek : I actually opened the ROM in a emulator (Jnes) and started muting sound channels and found it only uses the "PCM" channel for sound? I'm not sure what channel that is myself? Anybody know if the Rom emulates a special chip used in cartridges for better sound?

This is crazy! Makes you wonder what kind of games could've been made for the system if it was truly put to its limits.

I guess it is possible but I'm just about willing to bet that just the 1 min song would take up an entire nes cart.  How big was the rom file?

Damn. I wish that was in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. It encouraged me to listen to the theme song again. So catchy...

Can you imagine all of your favorite NES games having the sound quality of this...whoa...

The NES sound chip has one sound channel dedicated to PCM sample playback with the DPCM sound channel. However, due to all the ROM space that DPCM samples typically took up, usage was limited to short percussion samples, though some games used the DPCM channel for small, compressed, low-quality voice clips. It was still very impressive for its time.

The TMNT tech demo you linked to uses a ridiculously high-quality DPCM sample, most likely taking up all the ROM space in a NES cartridge. It's impressive in its quality, though!

fightorace: The ROM file was exactly 1,033 KB (1.01 MB). If the file is zipped (how I got it) it takes up 656 KB. Kirby's Adventure on NES took up 6 megabits so... (By MB, I mean megabytes)
So, the only way this would work with a cartridge is probably special mappers or some flash cart  .
