It's basically a program that helps you write your own RPG-style game. Everything is point-and-click, so you don't have to know any kind of programming language, and it has things like the character movement and a simple battle system already built in. (But it is possible to customize them if you know what you're doing.) IIRC the latest versions (XP and VX) have their own scripting language so it's even easier to write your own custom systems once you get the hang of it.

Hey, one more question for this thread please! Uh, how do you get to the point where you know what you're doing? I have sim rpg maker95 and I have plenty of ideas and nothing else. I need knowledge! Oh, and the help function on srpg maker doesn't work... That, and I need to be a 'trusted' member to get extra stuff for it so if anyone would be kind enough to put in a good word for the new kid on the block, that would be greatly appreciated!
