Welcome to the first Vizzed monthly Sony article, your one stop for all of your Sony gaming news!

In this May 2014 edition we'll cover several topics including:
-The console war -- Who's winning it?

-Upcoming game and accessory releases for all Sony gaming platforms.

-What to look for -- Which upcoming games/deals/accessories show the most promise?

And more! So let's get on with this, shall we?

The Console War - Who's Winning It?
It's the question burning in the minds of all hardcore PlayStation and XBox fans, but it's one that may not be so easily answered.

"That all depends on your definition..."
Very good point, Mr. Clinton.
So as many of you know, as of April 6th, the PS4 had sold over 7 million consoles, as opposed to the XBox One sales of just over 5 million. However, due to the XBox One's considerably heftier price tag, Microsoft was sticking pretty close to Sony in the profits margin.

So It's A Tie Game?
Hardly.

While Microsoft and Sony were neck and neck profits-wise as of early April, the console war isn't so much about who makes the most money as it is who generates the most console sales.

So looking at this from the perspective of sales, Sony was mercilessly crushing their competition as of April 6th 2014, outselling their strongest competitor by a whopping 29%, give or take 1-2%.

So, why does this matter again?
Put yourself in the place of a major game developer. Which console are you going to give exclusive rights on your games to? The one with around 30% more customers, doubtless! So the more Sony pulls ahead of their competitors, the more game companies they'll have developing for their system.

This doesn't mean the war is over though
Far from it. If Microsoft has any business sense in them (and one can only suspect that they do, given their company size), they'll find a way to even the playing field soon. In fact, it looks as though they may be doing just that; they recently secured the only legal non-Chinese game console development site in China since 2000. This will grant them a significant jump on Sony in the country of China, but it alone most likely won't make up for their worldwide lack of sales in comparison to Sony. Not to mention this will only boost them in one country, which says nothing for Western game franchise exclusives or exclusives of any other country except China for that matter. It would seem Microsoft's best move would be to drop their price tag very quickly, before the competition slants too far into Sony's favor, or else this generation will be dominated by Sony.

And How Is Sony Doing Amidst All Of This?
Let's see: they've made over four billion dollars since November, so I'd say they're doing pretty well.

To break things down more, as of April 13th, they had reported 20.5 million software sales. And as far as popularity goes, on March 31st they reported 135 million "shares" using the new share button on the PS4 dualshock controller, so it would appear that people are not only buying the PS4, but they're also enjoying it quite a bit.

Upcoming PS3 Games for the month of May

*An exhaustive list of games for the month of May 2014:
-Sportsfriends: a party game made by indie developers, that contains four odd little multiplayer mini-games. Including some sports type games, and others that lean more toward fighting genres.

The game is set to release on May 6th.
Rated E10+
-Mugen Souls Z: a crazy RPG that boasts an astounding 9,999 levels. The worlds are described by the developers as "Nonsensical worlds of ridiculousness". Insane damage multipliers, and anime graphics combine to reinforce that image, along with a cast of zany characters.

This game is set to release on May 20th.
Developer: Compile Hearts
Publisher: NIS
Rated T

-Wolfenstein: The New Order: A revival of the classic (and sometimes controversial) Wolfenstein series, The New Order carries on the Wolfenstein FPS tradition, this time raising the blood and gore to the unreal heights that we'd expect from a Wolfenstein game made for such a powerful Console as the PS3. Stealth is also an option for the more conservative Nazi killer, but how many people play Wolfenstein for stealth gameplay? So grab your virtual guns, knives, grenades, and other lethal weaponry, and follow your instructions to "kill everyone". And it all starts in just a few short weeks.
( WARNING: the following trailer contains intense gore and excessive blood)

Wolfenstein: The New Order is set to release on May 20th.
Developer: MachineGames
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Rated M

-Drakengard 3: An Action game that plays more like a Hack 'n' Slash, Drakengard 3 promises plenty of slashing action, massive bosses, and plenty of action. The player controls a "goddess-like" heroine who has some intense magical powers and a dragon for an ally. How cool is that? So with plenty of action, dragons, and magic (oh my!) Drakengard 3 looks to be in a PS4 near you in just three short weeks.

This game is set to be released on May 21st.
Developer: Access Games
Publisher: Square Enix
Rated M

-Watch Dogs: Quite possibly the most visually stunning game this gamer has ever seen, Watch Dogs initially comes across as a game for conspiracy theorists (and it certainly will appeal to them), but manages to slowly convince the player that this game's world could quite possibly be a revealing mirror of truth for our real world. With computers controlling literally every aspect of the game's world, hackers are breaking into the OS that runs their world to spy, manipulate the world around them, and more to defeat a corrupt power.
Watch Dogs is set to release on May 27th.
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft
Rated M

-Ace Combat Infinity: A new entry in the Ace Combat series, Ace Combat Infinity looks to raise the bar in more ways than one. Incorporating new online multiplayer features, it looks to be a promising thrill ride for enthusiasts of the genre.

The game is set to release on May 27th.
Developer: Project Aces
Publisher: Bandai Namco Games

-Kick-A** 2: Based on the movie and comic series, Kick-A** 2 is an action packed beat 'em up promising plenty of painful moments for the bad guys. If beating bad guys to an unrecognizable bloody mess is your kind of thing, then keep an eye out for Kick-A** 2 in just around four weeks.

The game is set to release on May 31st.
Developer: Freedom Factory
Publisher: UIG Entertainment

Upcoming PS4 Games for the month of May
-Stick It To The Man: A bizarre little game, Stick It To The Man is a side scrolling 2D game that goes heavy on the silly humor. With wacky events abounding from the very beginning, you'll find yourself at first puzzled as to whether this game is just getting off to an odd start, or if it intends to remain this zany throughout. The answer soon becomes clear however, that the zaniness is here to stay, and will only get worse (or better, depending on whether or not you enjoy such humor). Stick It To The Man seems to be as much about making the player laugh as it is actual story progression. With too much insanity to describe in a sane brief description, suffice it to say that Stick It To The Man will be heading (pun intended...just...trust me. You'll understand when you see it) your way in less than a week, so take care to keep your insanity!

The game is set to release on May 6th
Developer: Ripstone Games
Publisher: Zoink!

-MLB 14 The Show: Step up to the plate in this year's MLB The Show game. With updated PS4 graphics, the realism is pushed to an all but real life level. MLB 14 The Show also introduces new features, including player lock and quick count. This one looks to be a good game for MLB fans, and promises plenty of playtime for the hardcore sports gamer.

The player will be faced with the decision of whether they wish to surrender to the flame demon within them and use the powers gained by doing so to defeat the ice lords, or fighting the flame demon that possesses them and fight the foe using their own abilities. -Transistor: A game about a woman who --after being assaulted with a mysterious but powerful weapon-- gains control of said weapon, and uses it to fight her way through foes in her mission to find her assailants, and learn the mystery of the Transistor. Transistor offers an innovative twist on the classic RTS genre, allowing the player to freeze time, plot their moves and attacks, then unfreeze time to see their character execute the command chain that they set during the freeze. This one is all about strategy based fighting and includes some interesting puzzle elements. Transistor is an indie game that shows promise and creativity.

Upcoming Accessories/Software
Two words: Project Morpheus.

That's right, Sony has decided to dabble in Virtual Reality gaming. Will this be a huge success that offers incredible depth and immersion in our gaming, or another Virtual Boy? Who knows. What we do know is that Sony has been working for three years on making this Virtual Reality headset a real life reality.

Yes, it's a headset. Project Morpheus looks like some strange mix between a space age visor, and an old cheesy sci-fi movie's prop. It promises an immersive gaming experience like no other, using a 1080p resolution, and accelerometers and gyroscopes to determine your head's movement and orientation, and tell the game's camera to pan as you turn your head to the right or left, or look up or down.

Thankfully Sony isn't going full-out VR on this one though, and they chose to let us use the Dualshock controller to control the action in the games, or for those who do want a full out VR experience PlayStation Move is also an option. This gamer will stick with his controller personally, but to each his own.

To further the effect, Morpheus also utilizes "new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation". Indeed, it looks as though Sony has thought of it all. Now we just sit back await Morpheus' arrival, and see if VR is what it's cracked up to be.

Morpheus should be out soon, and will work with your PS4 as an optional add-on.

What's Up With The New PS4 Update?
A ton of new features have been added with the new update, including an optional Share Factory download that will let you edit your videos in several ways before sharing them, including the option of adding your own music to the videos (how cool is that?).

Next up we have the ability to record 1-15 minutes now, as well as the ability to archive your Twitch streams, and now the ability to disable certain settings that were hindering the use of external recorders for all of you YouTubers.

The lightbar on the controllers can now be dimmed, and finally the added ability to preload upcoming titles, allowing for less wait for upcoming downloadable games, and giving you a timer counting down to release.

There are several more updates that this doesn't even begin to cover, but it certainly sounds like it's worth your time!

What To Watch For
Time for a list of what games I think show the most promise. Bear in mind, this doesn't mean that I think these games are going to be the most successful, just that they look like the most enjoyable of the upcoming titles, at least for my tastes (and yes, they're listed in order).

#1. Bound By Flame (PS4). This game shows enormous potential, and if executed as well as it could be, should offer hours on end of replayability exploring all of the alternate scenarios and plot twists that are affected by your choices concerning resigning to or fighting against the flame demon inside.

#2. Transistor (PS4). The innovative combat system in Transistor looks to be some of the most fresh and entertaining gaming entertainment offered to us this month. It was somewhat of a toss up between Bound By Flame and Transistor for first place on the list.

#3. Drakengard 3 (PS3). The fluid and high paced action in Drakengard three looks promising of a great time for fans of the genre. To top it all off, aerial Dragon combat is promised as part of the package, almost blending genres for a freshness in the gameplay.

#4. Watch Dogs (PS4). The final game on my list, Watch Dogs is a high end game with a ton of intense cliffhanger action, that manages to fully immerse the player in the game and it's surroundings. Just be prepared to be paranoid.

Games of Honorable Mention
Stick It To The Man (PS4), The Sly Collection(PS Vita), and MLB The Show 14 (PS4).

On a final note, these games show the most promise gameplay wise, but they aren't necessarily games I'll personally play.

Game Picks Sorted By Rating
E-E 10+
#1. Mousecraft. An interesting little puzzle game on the PS Vita.

#2. MLB The Show 14. A great game that simulates life as a baseball player. (PS4)

The game is rated E 10+ for Alcohol Reference, Cartoon Violence, Comic Mischief, and Use of Tobacco

T
#1. Stick It To The Man. I'm torn on suggesting this one, given it's insanity and odd gameplay. It looks hilarious, but can the gameplay be pulled off? Who knows, but if you're feeling like a risk, go for it. I probably will.
The game is rated T for Violence.

M
#1. Bound By Flame. An interesting RPG that challenges your moral choices, and offers tons of replayability.
The game is rated M for Blood, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, and Violence.

#2. Drakengard 3. This one looks like great hack 'n' slash fun mixed with some action and RPG. (PS3)

#3. Watch Dogs. A highly intriguing, visually stunning game that offers action, thrills, and a disturbing look at real life possibilities.
This game is rated M for Blood, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol (Wow, what a rap sheet).

The Console War - Who's Winning It?
It's the question burning in the minds of all hardcore PlayStation and XBox fans, but it's one that may not be so easily answered.

"That all depends on your definition..."

(PS4)

#3. The Sly Collection. A delightful little game collection. It's a three in one pack that looks like a lot of fun to players like myself who haven't played a Sly Cooper game before. (PS Vita)

(PS3)
The game is rated M for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, and Strong Language.

Wow, great job man. I like the Wolfenstein game (probably just because I like Wolfenstein) and that mouse game. I don't like em enough to go out and buy a Playstation but they seem neat. Really though, it looks like you put a lot into this and it really pays off.

GenesisJunkie : Thanks, man. This took a lot of work, and all in the space of two days, since I had to get such a late start. I spent over ten hours on it, and still didn't get to cover everything I wanted (wanted to cover DLC and Bundles as well). Hopefully I can make a better one with the extra time this month.

And I liked Wolfenstein pretty good, but I won't be playing it because of the other content in it, unfortunately. I actually didn't mind the gore and blood at all. My favorites were easily Bound By Flame, Transistor and Stick It To The Man. They all look pretty interesting and have no content to keep me from playing it personally.
