Um... about the hunger games... my local library has 36 hold requests for it They should clear out in about 1-2 months, but if we are starting this soon... I don't know if I could obtain one.

I'm interested, I always thought that poison by john peel should have turned into a movie because I thought the book was awesome.

OH MY GOSH YESSS! I would love this. I prefer fantasy and science fiction, but honestly I'll read almost anything except romance. I also find my taste seems to be out of line with everyone else's... for example, unlike pretty much everyone who's read it, I DID NOT LIKE the Fault in Our Stars.

But, anyway, I always am lookiing for people to talk to about books, so this is the perfect opportunity for me.

(And if we DO pick the Hunger Games, sorry, but I'm going to completely rip into it).

Alright, it seems like the majority of people have chosen the Hunger Games, so we're going to start with the first book.

Barathemos :  I guess you'll have to sit out on this one?    I'd offer to send you pics or something, but I'm pretty sure that's illegal....

Alright, next, I need two pieces of information from everyone:

1. When can you obtain the first Hunger Games book?
2.  How often can you read?  For example, would three chapters a week be feasible to everyone, too much, or too little?

I'm super excited about this, and I'm so glad so many of you are participating!

I could probably use the internet of some sort to pick up a copy of the book.
I can read every day (I actually have to) so reading it wouldnt be a problem. Getting it is.

EDIT-

I got the book! I'll start reading it after I finish up reading another book I have, which wouldn't take long.

Singelli : I'm going to the library tomorrow and I'm sure I'll find the book there. Three chapters sounds easy but since I'm a huge bookworm I'll probably read even more than that in a week. I'm super excited about this! :-)

Singelli : Answer to point 1. I have the book, and have already read it. (I'll read it again!) To point 2 I would think that would be fine... Depending on the page layout of the chapters, I would have to check again. If I have a problem with that I'll post here!

To make sure that everyone has time to get the book (including myself!), I'm going to set our starting date for June 29th.  If that's a problem, let me know!  I'll create a new thread at that point for us to discuss in and layout out some courtesy rules.

Also... I've never read the books. Can someone give us insight... how does three chapters a week sound?  Personally, I'm a book worm and unless the chapters are crazy long, I'm sure I could manage much more than that.  Maybe we can do 7 a week?  How many chapters are in the book?

I got the paperback version and there's about 27 'parts'. The first 3 are between 30-40 pages long. Although, that the trade paperback (the one I have) has wide spacing and bigger font than the mass market paperback. I'm not even sure if there's a mass market paperback version of the Hunger Games, though.

Personally, I wouldn't mind reading a bit more. I can generally do 10 pages a day without forcing myself, so I think maybe 4 or 5 parts a week would be reasonable.

Singelli : Well, I read the entire thing this morning, so honestly I could read however many chapters you give... but there are 27, as Mistress said, that add up to 30-40 pages, even with my e-book edition. About 4 to 5 chapters does sound reasonable.

I'm curious how the discussion will work. Will it be on the forum, in chat, answering questions, etc.?

Alright everyone... it's been past the 29th for quite awhile! Where's all the discussion?!  I highly advise each of you to favorite this thread.
Just in case you haven't already though, let me summon all of you ONE last time.  This is the last time though! (Hopefully using tables in my layout will allow the summons to work. lol)

So I finally got my own copy and I've read the first chapter. I think it should be pretty easy to say 5 chapters a week, since we can read a chapter each week day pretty easily. I haven't heard any objections, so that's what I'm going to stick with.
I wanted to post my thoughts to stir some conversation, even though I haven't gotten that far.  So far... it's amazing!!!! I do have mixed feelings though.  The most basic of those is over the way it's written. I've never read a book that was not only in first person, but also written in the present tense.  It's kind of weird to be reading things AS they are happening to the narrator, so it takes getting used to. My guess is that this writing style is an attempt to further involve the reader and to more fully engage their emotions. After all, if you were witnessing events as they played out, instead of reflecting on events that have gone by, you'd experience a lot more adrenaline and apprehension. I'm not so sure this works for me, but I can appreciate the concept.
Secondly, I feel like it's written at a much lower level than what I'm accustomed to... and yet... some of the wordings and descriptions are phenomenal. On one hand, I'm not impressed by the lack of depth, and on another hand... I'm totally awed by the emotions that are conveyed.  I'm not sure how else to explain it, but maybe it's simply been too long since I've read a good book. lol Then too, I have experienced both moments of joy, and disappointment.
I've also never read a book after I've watched it's movie adaptation. I feel like, for example, my heart would have pounded and I would have squirmed on my seat in surprise at the last line of the first chapter.... had I not watched the movie.  XD I wished I had read the book first, because I'm sure I would NOT have been able to put the book down if I had.  The way that was presented would have been a thrilling shocker, I'm sure!
Have any of you reading the book now NOT watched the movie?  If so, how did you feel?
It's also interesting to read HAVING watched the movie.  There's a depth (as expected) which simply can't be found in even a 2 hour long movie.  For example, I never really caught onto the tense dynamic of the Everdeen family. I mean, the grudge that Katniss feels for her mother... wow!  And then too.... the movie jumped straight to romance between Gale and Katniss, yet the book introduces their relationship as a friendship.  There's hinting around at feelings from Gale, but none whatsoever on Katniss' side.  I'm sure that will change as the book progresses, as though she has slight feelings for him and didn't know it..... but that aspect of the story is certainly played out differently between pages and screen.
What are some of the rest of your thoughts?  Just to be clear, everyone should be finished with the first five chapters by July 6th.  Get reading!  XD And if you've read further, please be polite enough to ONLY discuss the first five chapters.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
