First, an apology: I am sorry if this as already been asked, but I couldn't seem to find it.

Second, the explanation:

I have a Linux-based OS that I would like to boot on my laptop (Windows 8.1 as the title says) from the USB. I have used YUMI [Your Universal Multiboot Installer] to put Ubuntu onto my USB drive.. But my only problem is that, it isn't being recognized as being there. It keeps saying that there is no OS on the drive. Can somebody help me out here?

Oh and please be nice and put it in layman's terms.

Stararmor : I have done this in the past, but honestly I haven't done so with Win 8.1. Honestly you would probably be better off just installing the OS on a partition of your HD and using something like VM ware to boot Linux on top of Win8.1

Maybe something like the following article can help you http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/ht/bootusbflash.htm
