So this is a question I've been meaning to put out there for a while now.

Everyone on Vizzed seems to be spread pretty well out across the States, and in some cases Europe too. I was gonna make this global, but I think that just allows for too many possible answers .

Anyway, I want to know what you guys think the worst city in America is. Now, when I say worst I mean most economically unstable, politically corrupt, etc.

Like don't put a city down just because you don't like their pizza or something.

For me, I'd have to say the worst is Detroit. I remember I was reading an article on Detroit saying that there were over 386 murders a year in Detroit (which is literally over 1 death per day).

You guys agree?

It's tough for me. I want to say Chicago, but I think I have to go with Detroit. Detroit is the definition of a bad area.

I live near Detroit and I grew up there as a little kid.  30 years ago it wasn't so bad but the massive amount of crime, poverty, violence, and unemployment matches the apathy, lack of caring, and no hope in sight.  It's a terrible city with a few very nice areas like Indian Village, Midtown, Woodward, and the Riverfront.

There is also a massive split between Detroiters and suburbanites.  There's a mayor named Coleman Young who fostered a spirit of "Us Black Detroiters vs. suburban Whites and we don't need them," that destroyed the potential partnership with the cities surrounding Detroit.  Kwame Kilpatrick has a glorious history that every can read about.

Nowadays?  There's a battle to build up an area around Midtown, by Wayne State University, to get hipsters and young adults in with nice condos, nice parks, and stores, bars, shops, etc.  There's a stretch of Woodward Avenue that is nice.  Go a mile in either direction and you're back in a warzone.

I live in Chicago and although they talk about all the murders, you dont' really experience that unless you happen to live in one of the impoverished areas. Otherwise it's a perfectly great city. one of my favorites in the US and I travel a lot for work. The only thing I could do without is this horrible winter we have had this year ;-)

All of the "worst" arguments are kinda pointless because it's really ones personal opinion and honestly, if you haven't been there, how would you know?

I'm going by experience and I'm gonna say Fort Myers, living in an overpopulated state means crime will happen and FM is pretty bad.

I am also going to go with Detroit because of what the media shows us and I was told of all of the poverty in that area.

I can't say, because I haven't traveled much in my life. I don't think it's fair to judge a place unless you've been there. Sure the media shows us slums in large cities like Los Angeles, Detroit, etc. but they also have a habit of over-exaggerating some aspects for ratings. Kind of like the commercials for the Children's Hunger Fund, or those ASPCA commercials with Sarah McLachlan, they embolden the worst of the worst and pull at your heartstrings to shape your opinions in a certain way.

The worst places that I've ever seen are certain neighborhoods in small towns in southern Washington. Parts of Vancouver, WA are pretty bad, acting as the "cheap" part of Portland for those who can't afford to pay Portland's high rent prices. Also, some Indian reservations are really gloomy looking.

Detroit vs. Chicago. I don't know which one to pick. Detroit is more of a black hole that Chicago is, but the murder rate in Chicago is through the roof.

In my opinion the worst city in America would have to be Chicago. I say this because of all the gun violence there, there murder rate, and the fact that they recently closed a bunch of school there due to a combination of gang activity and low performance.
