Has anyone seen the new Robocop movie?

I saw it not too long ago and I think it was awesome.
Go see it....NOW!!

The first one was classic action stuff. I don't want to see this thing. Den kille från Snabba Cash is Robocop? What on earth?

Brigand : This remake is what the original shoulda been.
The original was goofy and cheesy and had a really low budget.

Don't get me wrong, I love the original Robocop, but this one was much more serious and I think much more enjoyable.

Just for that I Have to check it out. And the original one was not cheesy... It was serious social commentary! Well as serious as "he is part machine, he is part cop... and this time... it is personal"- type of movies go.

I saw both movies.  I take extreme offense to saying the new one is much more serious.  The original Robocop took subtlety and satire to artistic levels.  The Corporation vs. humanity angle, the machine dealing knowing he had a lack of emotion and dealing with morality, and the propaganda brought on by greed and capitalistic pigs (not all capitalist are pigs).  Detroit looks like the dangerous place it is supposed to and there is a decided lack of day time sequences.

The new one?  It's PG-13 which means you can't create the same environment and have the same shock value as the original.  The torture scene that sets the whole story up is critical to the bad guys as well as the Robocop himself.  The toxic waste scene gave me nightmares for months after I saw that.  That'll stick with me forever.  The new one?  It's another flash in the pan movie that was made for 16 year olds and will have three or four sequals like Transformers and every other garbage movie.

Rewatch the old one.  Tell me it's not genius for the political commentary.  Rewatch the new one.  Tell me it is meant to mean more than just being a flashy, CGI laden kids' shoot 'em up.

I won't go and quote all the articles written to support the claim but the folks who are movie buffs agree.  Of course, you like what you like and I won't say you're wrong.  I'm simply offended that you think the original was campy.

I check the movie some day but one thing bothers me is that the new Robocop looks little like a Batman, even found good picture of it.

vanelan : I do some thinking before I post and that thought crossed my mind more than once.  I thought, "Am I just defending my childhood against something different?"  The movies are very different from each other and the storylines are miles apart.  It could be nostalgia.  I also know there are a lot of bad movies I saw when I was a kid and several remakes and reboots that I enjoy.  I'm not that quick to up and defend any old-timey movie or work just because something new comes out.  Most of the 80s and early 90s are campy, especially with violence and horror.  Friday the 13th or Elm Street?  Terrible.  Remakes would probably blow those movies away.

New isn't bad in regards to my childhood.  New and different toys are available, movies and books and entertainment reflect our current culture and not what was relevant 25 years ago.  I accept that.  I like new things.

I simply think the new version was directed at a younger population to get butts in the seats.  I won't ever watch it if it comes out on DVD and I won't spend time if it's on tv.  It's great a lot of people really like the new one.  I simply don't.

I considered it when I posted and I'm thinking more now.  In this case, I don't believe nostalgia is having an effect.  I really believe the original has depth of character, more personality, and is more enjoyable than the remake.

warmaker : I suppose that is fair enough. I only asked because more often than not, nostalgia tends to cloud people's judgement.

I think the new Robocop is definitely something worth seeing, if not just for the fact its not another Pixar (not that I necessarily dislike them) or Rom-com movie.

For starters, I never saw the original and I did not plan on seeing this one. My friend loved the original one and said that he did not want to see this one because he felt that it wouldn't be the same and too much would be taken out. So we ended up going to see the movie after we saw Non Stop and it was amazing, everything looked al high tech. Even my friend said that the movie was top notch. Yeah, you should go see it.

Quite honestly, if I had never even watched the original, then I defintely would not have bothered to see the remake.  The remake is an okay movie on its own, but it will always be compared to the original (whether that's a fair comparison or not).  If anythiing, the remake made me truly appreciate how awesome the original movie was.

So if you've watched the original, you can probably skip out on the remake.  if you haven't watched the original, then the remake is an okay enough movie to go see on its own.  (but then you should defnitely check out the original afterwards!)
