Mega Man 8 Review
Today I am going to be critiquing and reviewing Mega Man 8. So let’s get started.

Story: 9
The story starts off in outer space. Two robots a blue one, who is a good robot,
and a purple robot, who is an evil robot, are battling in space. Both of them collide
and plummet to earth. Meanwhile Mega Man is battling Bass in the city when he
is interrupted by Dr. Light telling him a strange meteorite has fallen into
Earth with huge energy readings. Mega Man leaves the battle which irritates
Bass. Dr. Light tells Mega Man to try to locate the energy from the meteorite
(purple robot) because it must not fall into the hands of Dr. Wily. Mega Man
rushes to the island were the two robots landed only to find the island is
owned by Dr. Wily. Dr. Wily takes the energy from the purple robot and goes to
his secrete base. Mega Man sees the injured blue Robot, who is called Duo, and
has Dr. Light to pick him up so he can be repaired. Just what is this new
energy source that Wily has acquired? Also who is Duo what is his mission? Mega
Man sets out once again to save the world and to answer these questions. Okay I
really liked the plot of this game. I thought it was creative and it sounded
like Capcom was really trying something new here. Dr. Wily is a reoccurring
villain in the Mega Man series but every time he has a creative way of trying
to take over the world. I really like to see that kind of creativity. By having Dr.
Wily take an energy source from another robot was something different. I also
liked how the plot introduces us to a new hero named Duo.  This plot was creative and it introduced the characters very well. Thus, I give Mega Man 8’s plot or storyline a good 9 out
of 10 rating

Graphics: 9
The graphics in Mega Man 8 were amazing. The stages look like real places. Grenade
Man’s stage looks like an actual factory. Sword Man’s stage looks like a ruin
you would see in  an Indiana Jones movie. Aqua Man’s stage looks like an
underwater ocean research lab. Search Man’s stage looks an actual jungle. The
backgrounds were nicely done and full of color. In addition, the sprints of
this game were very good. Mega Man can actually swim in this game. The enemies
look very colorful as well.  The controls are good, but there is a minor problem with them. As I stated this is the first and only game Mega Man can swim in. Mega Man while swimming sometimes appears to be sluggish. I do not know if that is because this is the only game he can
swim in or what. But since this was on the play station, so I was not expecting
that. Mega Man 8 does not suffer from lagging until some of the Dr. Wily
stages. The one stage I noticed a few lagging was the scrolling stage. I guess
that is because that stage scrolls, but I was really surprised there would be a
lag considering this is on the Play Station. So, the graphics in this game for
the most part were very good. The only problem was the sluggish feel to Mega
Man when they player is having to have him swim. Also the few lags in Wily
stages keeps them rating from being a perfect score. Thus I give the graphics a
9 out of 10. The backgrounds and color really bump up the rating.

Sound: 5

The sound is were Mega Man 8 suffers the most. If anybody has played this game they
know what I am talking about here. Mega Man 8 had the worst voice acting ever
concerning a Mega Man game. Mega Man sounds like a young child. In fact, it is
speculated that Capcom hired a 9 to 10 year old to do his voice. Do not know if
that is true but that is what the game sounds like. Dr. Light sounds a lot like
Elmer Fudd in this game. Also the robot masters some of their voices are
horrible. Aqua Man sounds like a child just like Mega Man does. The other robot
masters voices sound squeaky. Dr. Wily, Bass, Duo and Sword Man are the only
characters in this game that have a good voice. A lot of players were turned
off from this game because of the voices (more on that latter). Also another
annoying sound in this game is the sled voices that tell you to jump or slide;
they sound squeaky. Now for the positives concerning the sound. The music in
this game was actually pretty good it is a shame it was overshadowed due to the
horrible voice acting. Sword Man’s, Aqua Man’s, Search Man’s and Tengu Man’s
themes are very nice. I find their themes to be enjoyable and relaxing.  However, it’s a shame the voices were not up to the soundtrack’s level. Had the voices been better this would have been a higher rating. I give the sound to Mega Man 8 a 5 out of 10. The reason it does
not get higher is because of the voices. The reason it does not get lower is
because of the music.

Addictiveness and Depth: 6
Some people do not like this game mainly due to the voices. I happen to like this
game. Now is it one of my all-time favorites no. But, I do play this game often
just not as much as some of the others in the classic series.  Mega Man 8 did not have as much depth compared to its precursors. There are items to collect in Mega Man 8 and by
beating a stages mini boss you get an extra item. Items can be brought at the
store by collecting bolts. However, here is the thing the game only gives you
40 bolts to collect. That is not enough to buy all the items. The items can add
some replay value. Sometimes I play through this game with different parts but
even then you can’t buy everything as I stated. The stages are long and all of
them are broken up into first and second halves. So that right there adds some
depth. However I was really expecting more from Mega Man 8. I was hoping it
would be like Mega Man 7, Mega Man V, Mega Man IV and Mega Man 5 in terms of
depth and it wasn’t. Thus, I give the addictiveness and depth of this game a
middle of the road rating of 6/10

Difficulty: 9
This game really shines on its difficulty. Mega Man 8 was one of the hardest games
in the classic series for me. In fact, it rivals Mega Man 1 in terms of
difficulty.  The stages can be a nightmare due to obstacles such as the sledding part in Frost Man and Dr. Wily stages. Those are a real pain to get through. The enemy placement in this game was very numerous. It is so easy to get hit in this game. Enemies will hit you
from behind, corner you and surround you. The mini bosses in this game can be
nightmares as they have a ton of health. It should also be noted that there is
no Rush Coil or Rush Jet in this game. The closest thing you have to Rush Coil
is the Mega Ball which can be jumped on for a boost jump. In addition, unlike
other Mega Man games there are no energy tanks in this game. The player cannot
even buy energy tanks even in the store. I remember losing quite a bit of lives
in this game. The bad thing is the game does not really give you much to help to
compensate either. For some players that might be a turn off. But as for me I
like games like this. The boss fights really test your skill. Some of the bolts
in this game require creativity to get too so that is a big plush. I really
like games like that. The very first Mega Man game was difficulty mainly
because of the poor graphics and glitches in it. Mega Man 8 is just a
difficulty game that requires skills and some luck to master. I will be honest
I have not made it to Dr. Wily yet so that tells how hard this game is. You may
be wondering why I did not give this game a perfect score on difficulty. The
reason being is they are two items you can buy in the store to help with enemy
placement. Still, at the end of the day I give this game a 9 out of 10 on
difficulty.

Overall: 8
Mega Man 8 came out in 1998 and was released on the Play Station one counsel. I got
this game when it first came out. I want to think I purchased it at Kmart. I
was excited to play this game.  But in some areas I was disappointed in. I was disappointed in how bad the voices were. I was suspecting much more considering this was on the Play Station. A lot of people were turned off from this game because of the voices. I can see why to
be honest. Sometimes it is best just to hit the mute button when the characters
are talking, yeah they are that bad. Also I think a lot of people were turned
off from this game because you cannot buy every item in the store. Mega Man IV,
Mega Man V, and Mega Man 7 the player could buy every item by getting enough
chips or bolts. The difficulty in those games, where you could buy every item,
were still very difficult. So why did Capcom make it to were you could not buy
every item? I do not know maybe they were trying to get players to play the game
again with different parts who knows. These two things really kept this game
from being a huge hit. In addition, Mega Man X4 was released the same time as
this game. So it was like Capcom was competing with itself. Mega Man X4 turned
out to be a smash hit. I think Mega Man 8 could have been a huge hit if it was
not for the voices and other issues I mentioned. Okay now to the positives.
Mega Man 8 does have some things to offer. The graphics in this game are very
good. Mega Man 8 is also known for being very colorful. The sound track was
very good. Despite the negatives I do play this game again. However, I do not
play it as much as some of the other classic games like IV, V, 3, 4, 5 and 7.
Those games are my favorites, so this one is a good game but not as good as
others. I really think this game could have been so much better had it not been
for the things I mentioned. So would I recommend this game? Here is my take. If
high pitched children voices bother you it may be that you want to skip this
game or hit the mute button during the cut scenes. If you want to see how good
the graphics are then by all means play this game. If you can look past the
negatives in this game you will find it is a good game. So this concludes my
critique of Mega Man 8.
