The way I sort my Pokémon is from weakest to strongest based on level then exp to next level. I know of some people who go strongest to weakest, based on their favorites,and just all scrambled all over.

The way I sort the Pokémon in my party is really dependent on what area I'm in. For example if I were in a gym or an area that obviously has a boss trainer of some sort (Team Rocket, Team Magma, Team Galactic, etc.) I'll put my strongest Pokémon in the first slot second strongest in the second slot (in case of double battle) and my weaker, more situational Pokémon in the back of my party.

Like Chindogu said, it depends on the area. My team has my starter 2 levels stronger than the rest. So in gym battles I put the more useful non-starter at the front and save my starter to fight the last Pokemon unless it is a very bad matchup. In places such as the Battle Tower and Battle Maison I put gimmicky Pokemon at the front.
