The first game I’ve ever played that involves war is Civ 5. I picked it up about 8 months ago, and I fell in love. I got both the expansion packs, and i still play it a lot.

As for my first experience, I was so confused by everything that was going on. I was even more perplexed by the war mechanic. Every time I tried to attack another civ, I lost all of my units and at least one city. Turned out I was playing it on the hardest difficulty.

I do not know if this would count or not. But my first one was Tiny Tank. Its a war against machines were the player has to complete missions, and pick up guns such as mortars, rocket launchers, etc.

My first war game was Combat for the Atari 7800.  Terrible graphics, terrible controls, bad sound effects and it was hilarious.  I was a kid when I played it and it was the greatest thing to come out on Atari.

After that, Desert Command for NES was my first true, turn-based combat game.

ReZa : I love Wolfenstein and would consider it a war game since it's about WWII. 

I agree that not all FPSs are war games, but if it's connected to war or battles, I include it.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It came with the PS3 console. War games aren't exactly my favorite types of games, I prefer something more in-depth then "you are a soldier for x army and you must participate in these missions against y army," but I really enjoyed the game.

The first war game that I recall playing (and one of the few) is actually Age of Empires. I believe it was the first Age of Empires.  I really love tycoon games, and I have to admit I enjoyed building my 'camps' up far more than the actual war part. Because of this, it's probably one of the few war games I could really get into and actually try to finish the war.

Do you count Doom for being a war game, at least I think there was some kind of war before, now it's just one man against the unknown space mutants...
