Is it possible to turn the sound off in the games?  I really want to be able to listen to other things while playing the game rather then the game music at times.

Unfortunately, there isn't for the RGR itself. But there is a technique you can use to mute your game music and listen to other things by using the Window's music mixer.

Refer to this guide on how to do so.

you can press the escape button when playing SNES games and in the settings mute the game, you can double click the screen on NES games and I believe there is an option to turn it off there too.
