It seems like I'm either reading about the obesity epidemic in the United States, where everyone is severely overweight, or I'm watching crossfit competitions, seeing people head to the gym, and work hard on their bodies.

I work at a YMCA and we have a ton of really fit people.  I go out in public and it's the opposite.

Are there 'normal' people anymore or is it all or nothing with fitness?

I'm only slightly above 'average' healthy. I eat lots of junk food and exercise too. I do swimming and running for school but I'm really not that muscled. I do muscle building and strenuous workouts so I really should take control of my eating, but even if I did I wouldn't be extremely fit. My exercise makes me look normal rather than thin and I'm still really underweight (but better than I was two years ago).
I do see a lot of 'normal' people in school. If they're not in sports, I usually see them taking parts in the school play, environment club, and others that require movement.
Many members of my family don't exercise much at all and look perfectly normal and healthy. They're not staying extremely fit but not becoming obese either.

I think it is all about what you are focusing on when you out in public, working at the YMCA has you thinking about fitness too much.  I am one the these "average healthy people".  Because of my job I do a lot of hard labor and that keeps me in good shape, but when I go out, yea I see obese people but  I mostly see people of average health walking around.  Somehow focusing on fitness has you thinking about obesity had so when you go out you focus on those people so that it seems to you there are few people of "average" fitness around.

I am only slightly above 'average' healthy, totaling in on a body mass index (BMI) of close to perfection. All I need to do is gain a pound or two, and I will achieve this 'average' healthy you are talking about.

I remember having a conversation similar to this when I was an undergrad. The question is how do you define healthy. Some one may appear to have a healthy BMI but yet have several health conditions that are not visible. On the other hand some one may look to be overweight but yet be healthy. So defining who healthy can be tricky. To answer your question I think there are a lot of average people out there.

Well I feel like somebody can be more healthy even if they don't look it. Somebody can be a few pounds over weight and still eat very healthy and not have any health problems. People are not just over weight because of eating habits a lot of times it's meds they take or family genetics.. just because somebody doesn't look fit doesn't mean they are not healthy.
