I won't say what the difference (if there is one) is for about a week but I want to know what people think for the sake of general curiosity more than anything else

In my country there is minor assault, assault and aggravated assault. These are the best ways to translate them maybe.

My guess it is the same as it is here with assault and aggravated assault by law.  For assault to be a battery you have to use something to beat the victim with. Well something other than your fists but not to shoot the guy. Like a club, a baseball bat, two by four, eightball in a sock, a rock, a chair... Or beat the guy really really hard.

Just my earnest guess without instantly go and google the fact.

Without using Google, I'd say battery would be a response if your life was truly in danger and assault would be if you thought you were in danger. Of course, this was assuming you were acting out of self defense. Otherwise, I haven't looked too far into either. I'm looking forward to seeing what the difference is; I love learning new things!

Under section 39 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (amended 2003)assault is defined as making one apprehend the danger of immediate physical violence. However the violence anticipated does not have to be immediate as the definition would suggest, a silent phone call or staring through a window would be sufficient for a conviction of assault even though immediate physical violence is impossible.

Battery on the other hand is merely unwanted physical contact from another, a mere poke or touching of clothing would be sufficient for battery but for obvious reasons it is not enforced in it's true form.
Oddly enough the cutting of hair is actually assault (meaning both assault and battery) with occasioning ABH.

I think battery would be if you thought you were in danger and assault is actual danger. Many things can come into context with this question but without google that is what I believe. Usually that person actually hurt you if it was assault and battery is just a thought on the table.

I forgot to mention in my previous post but assault and battery together create common assault but assault occasioning bodily harm is normally used instead due to the broader range of sentencing.
