For the last 2 months about, my laptop battery was essentialy dead. I could not use my laptop without the charger so there was only three spots in my house that i could sit comfortably with my laptop, two of which I could not use when companie came over. About two weeks ago I got around to ordering a new laptop battery and it finnaly came. What I'm wondering is, has you laptops battery ever done this? Assuming your using a laptop.

I am not sure what sub-forum this goes under.

Yes, my old laptop's battery had died. I essentially kept the dead battery in and let it run constantly on a charger for a few months before ordering a new battery. I'm sure they die after a few years regardless of how well you treat them (mine lasted three years).

No my laptop has never done this. Seeing as it has been my only laptop and I have had it almost 2 years now. I have had a couple of problems but I just took the battery out and reinserted it.

There are certain things you need to do to condition a laptop battery when you first use it, otherwise it will have a shorter life and eventually stop working.

Depending on how old your battery is, with that being said, they don't last forever and eventually degrade to the point that they are unable to hold a charge.

Actually, yes, it has. I had to buy a new battery, and it irked me so much. I had pretty much only one place I could use it, and by the time the new battery arrived from Amazon, I was almost ready to take a sledgehammer to my laptop. But my battery was pretty old, so I think it had degraded a bit too much to continue being useful.

Well, at one point, my laptop battery would be plugged in constantly and still not charging :. It was very annoying, and it noted "plugged in, not charging", but my father and I re-adjusted the battery and put it back in. It hasn't happened since.

I think the most common cause of this happening is having the charger plugged into it all the time. Some people just leave it plugged in when they are on their laptop. Even more people tend to plug in their laptop before going to bed and let it charge overnight, when it only takes an hour or less to fully charge. When that happens, you are constantly pumping energy into the battery, making it have to continuously cycle it, severely decreasing it's lifespan. So only charge it when it needs it, and no longer. It happened to me once (not my fault. My wife's). It happened to my wife's too. But she had an even worse problem happen. Eventually, the battery couldn't take in power at all, and the computer wouldn't work with the battery in. It would only work with the battery out and the charger plugged in. So she just did that. What happened is energy kept going directly to the motherboard instead of a battery. Eventually, her motherboard pretty much died, and it was completely unusable. At that point, she had to get a new one. Learned her lesson.

I've had batteries degrade with other devices, but never my laptop battery. That said, my current battery laptop isn't that old.

It happens to those that leave their charger in for too long when the battery is full. The battery can hold less and less charge untill it reaches the point where the charger must be in at all times.

Yes, this has happened to me before. I believe it was my old Acer Aspire One netbook. This happened to my battery because of old age, as I bought it 7 years ago. Also, I rarely used it, making the battery die faster, as well as also keeping it plugged in for long periods of time. Here are some good tips for keeping optimal battery health: http://www.pcworld.com/article/191574/long_live_your_laptop_battery.html

Yes, my laptop battery did that one time. If I did not have it charging it would die. What it was for me was my battery was going bad. If a laptop battery is bad after you unplug the charger they usually just go dead. The way it was for me was something similar to this. when I would have my batter charging and still on my laptop it would show it was 90% charged. If I unplugged it the batter would automatically go down to 4% and the computer would shut off. My advice would be it is probably time to order a new battery for your laptop.

tornadocam, that's interesting. I've never heard or experienced an 'almost dead' battery. They usually go from only lasting an hour to lasting no time at all. lol

SetoKaiba1025 : Thank you for posting that. I haven't been following quite a few of those tips now that I think about it.

Yep it has happened to the laptop I am currently using, the same problem that rcarter2 says his wife had in fact(though I have not had any problems with the motherboard). That said with modern laptops and batteries leaving the charger in is not actually a problem as the computer switches to using the charger for power once the battery is fully charged, the same as if you were to take the battery out and charge it. However it is still best to unplug the chargers because while you don't have to worry about cycling the batteries do last longer if charged to 70% and discharged to 30% than going from 1% to 100%(Lithium ion batteries should never be allowed to hit 0%). Lots of misinformation floating around about this from older batteries when you were supposed to drain it all the way then fully charge it, and before smart charging to prevent the battery doing many small cycles if left plugged in was prevalent. Also of note is that temperature is a major factor with lithium ion batteries high temperatures will quickly kill them(my computer had a problem with the fan and the battery only lasted 9 months as a result). Leaving the charger in generates more heat than having it out also so you should in fact avoid that though it is a negligible difference in most cases. A final note being that all of this information only applies to lithium ion batteries if you are using an older or less common type like NiCd then pretty much none of this applies.

Yes, my current laptop has a dead-ish battery, meaning the battery will only charge to about 5%, so I have to keep it plugged in if I want use it more than 10 minutes, not to mention the screen is really messed up. Given this scenario, I keep by laptop plugged into my tv to use as a monitor, since it might as well be a desktop.

I got my laptop for free. It was my dad's co-worker's old laptop and he had no use for it. The battery was already dead when I got it, so I had to get a new battery. Even with a brand new battery my laptop only lasts about and hour, so I usually keep it plugged in despite what rcarter says.

My laptop battery has been dead for a couple years now. I keep it plugged in all the time now and basically just use it as a desktop. I still take it to friends' houses every now and then but I have to make sure it is plugged in there as well. It's a little annoying but I don't actually mind that much.

I'm going to go ahead and close this, been answered, no real point of keeping it open.

Yes, laptop batteries will die eventually, you'll need a constant charge to keep your computer on or a replacement. Yes, this has happened to me before, but it's not the end of the world either, anyway, spam will be coming soon, going to prevent it.
