hello : D So I saw this like AWESOME animal just now and thought " Hey ... why should I keep it to myself ? " Its name is Alpheidae or more commonly known as Pistol Shrimp . This seas crustacean can literally shoot its prey . One of its claws are slightly deformed to make a clicking sound . A LOUD clicking sound . And because it is underwater , bubble are formed . Now these bubbles as harmless as they seem are the " bullets " of this shrimp's pistol . When the bubble collapse or start to burst , the inside or the cavity of the bubble reaches temperatures of like 5500 degrees Celsius . Almost as hot as the surface as the sun . Now THAT ... is impressive .

If you have any other amazing animal factoids that you'd like to share then feel free to post Plus there is another animal that is practically INDESTRUCKTABLE . And I want to share that too .

Mr. Zed : well I know about a jellyfish that reverts to an asexual state when it's about to die. Asexual means "child or infant-like state", so it basically goes through life from child to adult to OAP over and over again. This ONLY HAPPENS if its going to die of old age or an illness/ abnormality of old age. if you stab it then it'll  die don't  worry ;D! So immortality is actually real (in a way),  not just a hope !

Tardigrade or more commonly known as , Water bear or sea piglet , is a small in vertebrate with eight suction cup like legs that it uses to feed on lichen and things smaller than itself . But the legs aren't whats so fascinating about it . This animal can : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUC0_HjNFBs . Watch for knowledge.

Mr. Zed : haha watched the video looked really cool!! Well I know it's not exactly an animal (duh) but there's a tree called the acacia tree which, when nibbled on by antelopes or any other animals (excluding giraffes, birds or any animal capable of getting high up in the tree), releases a gas called ethylene, which can travel about 40-60 yards and warns other trees that herbivores are in the area. The trees then radiate leaf tannin, killing antelopes when eaten. These trees once managed to kill 3000 antelopes in one day in South Africa, yet we use this tree for medicine and wood ornaments everyday! And the jellyfish is called (big word alert!!) Turritopsis dohrnii

Kayladog! : Fascinating . A lower class living organism is able to kill 3000 of its predetors without even moving . So do YOU want to be a Zoologist in the future or do you just know stuff ?

Mr. Zed : Mainly general knowledge, bit of wanting to do something with animals. Well for me it was always either something to do with animals (scientist finding more about them via dissecting/research etc) or a doctor/nurse. Right now I'm doing art, chemistry and physics so I was leaning more towards doctor but being a zoologist sounds fun! And same Q to you are you a zoologist or hoping to be one?

As far as cool animals, the cuttle fish is of course awesome, with it's flashing skin and it's camouflaging capabilities.

Also look up the Japanese spider crab, the world's biggest crab, one leg is about 3 feet long, it's insane.

Kind of piggy backing on the pistol shrimp. It reminded me of a type of crab that does something somewhat similar. It can slam it's claws together insanely hard. If doesn't make a bubble. Instead, it snaps its claws hard enough to send a very powerful vibration wave, which is directed at its prey. The sound wave is so powerful, it literally knocks the prey out cold, leaving it to be eaten while unconscious.

Wow this is some interesting facts about animals. I have always loved animals and I think it would be cool to be a Zoologist. Also did you know that a Asian fish that crawls on land can live for a week out of water? Also Whale sharks reach a growth of 45' and can weigh 12 tons.

I've always loved studying science, and biology is my favourite branch of science.

Something cool about jellyfish and sea anemones is their highly specialized stinging cells. These cells contain a "spring loaded" barb - called a nematocyst - that is triggered by touch, which shoots into the victim's flesh and injects venom. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cnidocyte

The neat part is that I've experienced this for myself. If you touch an anemone's tentacle (you can do this at aquariums with interactive tide pools), it feels sticky. That is actually an illusion, it is actually the tiny barbs firing into your skin and then being pulled out as you move away.

I love weird animals! This is the thread for me...Ever heard of the Mantis Shrimp? Well, it's basically the bigger, melee version, of the Pistol Shrimp. It has a punch force of over 2,000 newtons. And it's punch is so gnarly that the universe can't even hold it. It's punch makes both light, and heat, and the bubble it makes implodes.

Also, the Bull Shark can survive in fresh water. And they've been caught deep in mainland Australia, the Mississippi River, and The Amazon. Creepy right? And they're more aggressive than their great white cousins.

I love the mantis shrimp, actually I had to write a whole essay about it for one of my college applications! What's even cooler about the shrimp that hasn't been mentioned yet is how it has 16 color receptive cones versus our 3 different types. That's so many new colors. It has receptors for polarized light too. Yes, the mantis shrimp is my favorite weird animal.

I didn't actually know about this, and I was an animal Science student back in high school, and all we learned was about animals, ecosystems and stuff. They never taught us that.
