Something I wrote in H. Biology after I finished my test early. As I wrote in the description, it occurred to me, 'Do we really see ourselves in the mirror, or our own biases, whether we fear or love ourselves?'

The Mirror

Gazing at the broken mirror,
Glass littering the floor,
I suppress a shiver,
And search for the door.

But there isn’t one out of your mind.

My reflection gazes up,
Multiplied by jagged shards,
And I think, ‘How out of luck,
‘That I was drawn this card.’

Looking down I see my tear-stained face,
Though it wavers to a blur,
And is with others replaced,
Images on the glass slurred.

I see a girl I never had been,
So innocent and sweet,
Standing next to the woman I wished I was,
Beautiful both outside and within.

She is a stranger carrying my visage,
As if I’d never seen her before,
Lips curved into a smirk of playful mischief
As she gazed up from the floor.

I saw another,
Hidden the back,
And she whispered, “Don’t bother-
“We’re everything you lack.”

I saw all I feared I wasn’t,
Everything I wished I could be.
But of the faces looking from the mirror-

Which was me?

Last I saw the most forward one,
A malignant gleam in her eye.
“Why come to a mirror,” she said,
“When you know I am the one that in you resides?”

I awoke and gazed in the mirror,
Suppressing a shiver.
All I saw was but one face, my own face,
But I felt it was misplaced.
Was the woman looking so fearfully,
Tearfully, crying for nightmares to disappear.
Fearing they would always be free…

Was that poor thing really me?

Wow. Another great piece of work, Stephi (am I allowed to call you that? lol).
Again, nothing short of impressive.
