Some movies you come across are just pure art. Just pure raw art. Regardless of how they make you feel or end or even start these movies build into art and become more than just film. One such film is Twelve years a slave. Although when you consider the history around the movie since this is a historical piece you could make an argument against my statement but in my eyes this movie is art and to be honest I don't give a damn what ya'll think this is my review.
Twelve Years a Slave is a historical piece based around the memoirs of Solomon Northup. The story is of his life after he a freeman was abducted and sold into slavery during the 18 hundreds. We see his twelve long hard years in slavery and his eventual triumph returning to his family in New York. And essentially that is the whole movie but it is very moving and inspiring. And even puts a new meaning to the phrase "tougher than nails." Because Solomon is the toughest and most tenacious man who as probably ever lived.
Now I must confess I cannot give away more because every detail is integral to the storyline and would spoil the whole movie for you. So if you are looking for a spoiler of the movie go to IMDB and look up the synopsis if that is what you are looking for. I also feel the need to warn you this is not a movie like Quinton Tarintiono  gave us a few months ago. This is no vengeance movie so if you want Django go somewhere else because this movie is the opposite of it. With Django being piece on kick ass and take no names Twelve Years is more about the will of the human spirit how to keep moving through the tough crap and survive as best you can without getting your hands dirty or your spirit tarnished.

Ok earlier I lied I have to spoil the ending a bit but I need to talk about it so if you don't want the end ruined skip this paragraph now. At the end Solomon escapes slavery in the most unclimactic way. Are you ready for this it is just pure awesome (sarcasm) He gets a white man who was hired to help the slaves work and observe them to write a letter for him to New York asking for his freedom papers. And this works. Although this happened in real life it still makes for a lack of climax and brought me down a bit all be it they tried to make it and I must give it to Steve McQueen HE did a great job directing this keeping the mood tense but yet still loose enough for you to feel the big hits.

Story: This movie has an amazing story for a historical drama. It draws you in and you feel every emotional hit Solomon takes so I have to give it a 9.2 for the amazingness
Sound: The sound is actually quiet with a mixture of historical pieces in the midst of the action it makes for a beautiful overture so 7.8 they could have done a bit more but I get what they were going for
Visual: Visualy this movie is good but it isn't a great visual you don't come to see the movie as visual film it is plot and story driven 8.5 the movie is good visually but not like gravity. Although the story is so good I went hard on the rest of the film.
Characters: This is where the movie shines I can't say enough how good the character development is in this film 9.8 the best I have seen ever regardless of what I said about my summer wars review I was biased about that film but this film is the best Character development I have seen EVER.
Personal enjoyment: 9.2 I enjoyed the movie a lot but it is not a movie you should watch when you life has problems it is depressing and will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride.

Total 8.9

Its a great film go see it if you have the chance actually this is a definite see movie if you enjoy history or dramas you will love this movie watch it.
