There are several days more or less dedicated to the same thing (although Veterans day is somewhat different in that its for all veterans, not just those that died.

)

On the 28th of july, 1914, world war one began.

At the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, 1918, Hostilities ceased. Months later a "peace" treaty was signed, and "the war to end all wars" was over.

With more than 16 million dead, and 20 million wounded, it was one of europes, if not the worlds, bloodiest wars.

It also changed the world.

From wikipedia:

"No other war had changed the map of Europe so dramatically. Four empires disappeared: the German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Russian. Numerous nations regained their former independence, and new ones created. Four dynasties, together with their ancillary aristocracies, all fell after the war: the Hohenzollerns, the Habsburgs, the Romanovs, and the Ottomans. Belgium and Serbia were badly damaged, as was France, with 1.4 million soldiers dead,[143] not counting other casualties. Germany and Russia were similarly affected"

After this final war, barely 20 years later, the second "final" war began, with the loss of over 60 million people (more than 2% of the worlds population).

Again with the classic aftermath of nations rising and empires falling.

Since then countless wars have been waged, and probably about 20 times as many people have now died.

Today is remembrance sunday here, and tomorrow armistice day, and I feel, a day for reflection.

To mourn the dead on all sides, past present, and undoubtedly, future.
