I wrote this when I finished my work in English early (that class is a bit easy). So, I thought of people starting over, the ideal 'dream place' for them to begin anew, and I tried to capture that idyllic, dreamlike quality in this poem. Whether I succeeded or not... well, I dunno. But the rhythm to it was a pain. I followed a certain pattern that I had to actually write out, something I don't usually have to do.
Well, without further ado...
The New Ground
We’re looking for a place to start, To begin anew in the dawn. We’ve claimed our victory, And now we want to settle down.
Sighing on this distant shore Ready to mount our own world; And this place is as good as any other For you, me, the future sisters and brothers.
Moonlight flying on white wings, Sunlight skipping stones on the beach As the wind softly sings; I think we’ve found the place we seek.
Safe from the world’s wrath, Do we ever have to go back? Yes, my dear, we do, But only to sever all threats to you.
We’ve found a place to start, Someplace to call ours at last; The scenery painted on our hearts, The mountain at our backs like a great ship’s mast.
Here we’ll start anew, Behind us the ocean blue, Guarding our future bright and Painting us with reflected turquoise light.
Silence, now, m’love, And look at what we’ve gained: Our freedom, a golden dove, And lives never the same.
I see, m’dear, a future right Not dampened by the cloudless nights, And here, right now, the golden sound- A harmony, a melody, on this new ground.
