What discovery or invention do you think has had the biggest impact on our species?

I would have to say the internet, it's connected people from across the globe in a way that was never thought possible before, It can spread ideas, discoveries and knowledge across the world at literally the speed of light. It's something I wish less people would take for granted.

What are your thoughts?

My answer is controlled fire.  It allowed our ancestors to cook meat and derive more calories from animals, thereby allowing them to develop stronger, faster, and smarter.  It allows us to live in a variety of environments and control that environment.  It created potable water for humans before iodine and other processes were required.  It is the beginning of Humankind's control over the elements and it marks the time when humans could mold our world to our needs.  No other animal has control over fire.  We're the top of the food chain and the most developmentally advance species that we know of.  It sets us apart and makes us better.  I sleep at night, safe and sound, because fire, long ago, allowed my ancestors to dominate their world.

sloanstar1000 : Believe it or not, but I will say the pen. When the first pen came out, it was probably thought as the greatest thing ever, probably comparable to basically any other invention.

The harnessing of electricity. 'Nuff said. Without it, tons of things would be impossible.

Well I think it is the stem cells that can be a possible cure for cancer ( I am not sure ) . When you have cancer you develop cells that kill other cells or something like that , These cells infect other cells till almost every cell is infected and is dying or something . With stem cells , these cells can be destroyed and stem cells help to make new ones ... good ones . At least that is how I think it is

I think electricity in general has been one of the biggest scientific discovery and invention! It opened our world to so much like for instance light and electronics.. gas heat.. air.. so many things that it seems would be hard to live without now.. sense we have had them for so long.. I can't even sleep good or barley any without my fan!

Besides internet and all that, I would say that Mars dirt isn't red, but instead a grayish color/colour which is pretty interesting in space to me. There could be a sign of water there or something! Or possibly past life on Mars.. or aliens??? xD

But who knows now, it is still unknown, they are looking into that.

I normally divide history by the invention of controlled fire, agriculture, electricity, and the internet. Besides these four obviously incredible discoveries, genetic engineering is likely the biggest discovery. It is used to alter crops, to make bacteria create substances we need, and gene therapy attempts to fix genetic diseases.

I think that the discovery of gravity has influenced a lot of scientific ideas that we know today. It was a close call between gravity and electricity.

Mr. Zed : That isn't even remotely what cancer is or how it works. Cancer is simply mass production of abnormal cells. Often, little bits of your genetic code can get damaged during replication, or from external means. If it gets damaged in a significant area, your body will continue to make tRNA from that DNA, and make abnormal cells. Those cells are basically useless. Cancer cells aren't some cells that kill other cells. And they aren't fixed by stem cells. Stem cells are simply cells that haven't been given a label (metaphorically speaking). They are basically blank cells that simply become whatever type of cells that surround them. So if you put stem cells in the presence of cancer cells, they would become cancerous cells too.

I have a few that I think are great and could earn the title.
The first being the invention of Antibiotics
The Second being the invention of nuclear energy
The Third being the invention of weather satellites because we can now detect developing tropical storms.
The forth being the invention of Doppler Radar, because it can detect developing tornadoes

Easy. Air conditioning.

KIDDING! I'd say discovering penicillin/antibiotics, as it allows people to live longer, and for more quality years, regardless of the other technological advances are in the world. There are so many conditions now that we don't even think about  that would kill many people in the past.

My top three are the fire, the wheel and taming of the horse. The rest just sort of followed and here we are. You can debate me on this, ofcource but without these basic things I doubt we have made to the next great inventions.

Fire is easily the biggest discovery ever. Without fire, we have nothing. Fire was what kept humans alive during the winter before heat was invented. Fire is the basis of everything. In history we used fire for warmth, light, cooking, melting things (like metals), etc. We may not rely on fire as much anymore, but without fire nothing would exist.
