As much as I like specific Fire and Grass types in my opinion (and this is only my opinion mind you, nothing more) the water types have to reign supreme. They, I must admit are great in most games as most have started with a rock type gym (all but gold silver and crystal).

For me, it kinda depends. Fire types are awsome because the have alot of high attack power. I find this type overatted if you ask me.

Water types are more all around, nothing to special but they are still cool.

I would have to vote for fire because torchic is my favorite but i have picked a water starter once (piplup) and i have to admit it was pretty strong and the first gym leader is rock so it was also helpful but my vote still goes to fire.

As a starter I would choose grass because most grass types can learn earthquake which can conquer fire(with the exception of charizard) and using solarbeam it can defeat the water type.

But my favorite type of all is Dragon.
