I always picked the grass type. They level faster, learn moves quicker, and are useful from the beginning of the game and against gyms, something that the other 2 types cant boast to be.
The fire type is nearly always useless untill later in the game, when you could have gotten a wild fire type, and the water type, well you get Magikarp early in most games and Gyarados is useful.

Yes. You are right, but in the Pokemon Games, all the water type starters can learn ice type moves and defeat your Rivals' Grass type starter!

Heh, because my rival always had a fire type starter it was easy to beat him because I nearly always had a Pokemon with Surf.

I always start with fire for multiple reasons

1. I'm a pyro XP

2. It takes skill to start with fire properly, you need to know how to make sure that no matter what you face, you can be ready for it

3. All the fire starters and unbelievably cute and awesome at the same time

4. Fire starters might as well be the underdogs these days and I always root for them
