Well, there are simple tasks which you can do such as defrag and disc cleanup, both can be accessed by typing them into the start menu.
You want to minimise background processes if you want to get the most out of your computer: Open task manager with ctrl+Shift+esc, click the Processes tab and then click CPU so there is a tiny arrow above it pointing down and see which process is taking up the most. You want the one called 'System Idle Process' to be high. Most of the names should be instantly recognisable and it's up to your own judgement and knowledge what to close. (right click)

sephen : How much space have you used on your computer? If it's a large amount, then you should probably clear some space by deleting files that you no longer need, or store them in the cloud. I use cloud storage for the same reason.

Also, make sure that everything is up to date. This can sometimes cause your PC to slow down.

If your PC is still running slowly after doing these things, I would recommend a free program called Razer Game Booster. You'll need to sign up before you can use it

Having low hdd space or outdated software is not going to cause your system performance to nosedive.
Likewise going through your proccesses and shutting down stuff is stupid, you have to do that every time you turn the pc on and you will probably end up closing something important.

Obvious and simple thing that "no one" ever seems to know.
When you install software the maker can choose when to set it to run. They can do this because microsoft know there are legitimate reasons to do this.
However, most companys, a holes that they are, add their program to the list of startups.
This means, every time you turn your pc on, steam, itunes, chrome, that annoying photo software you use once every 3months, it all opens at startup and continues running despite you not even using it.
Remove all the applications other than those by microsoft. Your system can start them uppwhen you click them.

Click windows (orb).
Click run. If that isnt there search either run or cmd.
Type msconfig in either of these and hit enter.

Check the box "selective startup."
Click the startup tab.
Uncheck most of that crap. Itunes, adobe, firefox self update service, all highly unnecessary.
I will be immensely surprised if that doesent speed thhings up for you.
If you want easy system optimisations you could buy something like norton utilities.
Its got a nice set of optimisation features like boot defrag, registry cleaner etc etc.

Id be very surprised if chaging your system start up settings doesent yield immediate results though
