Do your dreams seem to have a re-occurring theme?  If so, why do you think this is the case?

My dreams almost ALWAYS carry the same theme, as far back as I can remember. In almost every single dream I have, I end up running.  I usually end up captured or in hiding, and I'm always trying to escape my situation. I end up having to run while being chased, and I never seem to just make a clean escape.  There are never any 'freebie' dreams where I can be the victor and remain un-chased.

I will never know what causes this, but I have a feeling it might be pretty common.  I think that most people want to escape so much of their lives that the unconscious mind reflects on it even during sleep.

I've also heard flying is a pretty common theme, but I don't really know much about why it might be so.

Yeah I guess so. I rarely have nightmares, and my dreams are almost always pretty epic. The theme is usually fantasy or games. I often dream stuff similar to The Lord of the Ring, Harry Potter or Zelda dungeons. I love these kind of dreams and I've had them as far back as I can remember. I can remember dreaming that I was Harry Potter when I was like 5 years old, and when I was a few years older and started to like Lord of the Rings I remember that I often dreamed that I was on an epic journey similar to the one in TLotR series. And this past week I've had I think three lucid dreams! Imagine being in a dungeon filled with dragons and various monsters, and you're the hero, and you can do whatever you want! Oh God, I love sleeping lately :3

I don't have any re-occurring dream themes. Most of my dreams are very random and make little sense and I can't remember my dreams very well so it's hard for me to recall a theme in my dreams.

I don't think I have any themes going on in my dream except if I remember them, I am always in my own dream. They are usually very random, and some are even nightmares for me.

My dreams are really random and always depends on what I've been doing before going to bed and what have been trough my mind all day, so if I've been playing, for example, Pokemon so everything I've in my mind will get mixed with Pokemon and form a dream.

Singelli : I've always heard that dreams are the expression of what is going through the mind of the person in a more abstract way and dreams most of the time doesn't mean one hundred percent what you see but the emotional value you give the things you see in your dreams so looking at them out of the box is the best way to understand what is troubling you. When you're running is because you're trying to escape from or of something and depending on the end of the dream it shows your hope of escaping so maybe knowing what is troubling you so much that is making you want to escape.

Sometimes the places are the same, not what is happening in them. I rarely fly but many times I dream of falling down or being in a high place that is suddenly very wobbly and going back and forth miles high in the air.

Thanks to a dream I had a few nights ago, I actually thought of another common theme in my dreams. It's not as common as the 'running away' bit, but frequent enough to be considered a theme.

I have many dreams about my twin's hatred of me, and things she does as a result of it.  Those dreams are always painful and make me cry.

I've always had a fear of heights, so it makes sense that one common theme I find in my dreams is falling. Sometimes I jump off a swing and end up falling from beyond-reachable heights (like say I'm on a swing and suddenly I end up higher than the buildings after I jump) and other times I just fall from surfaces high in the sky.It's not all the time but it seems to me that it happens solely to wake me up when I need to. Like an internal alarm clock. I always wake up right before hitting the ground. Perhaps that's a reflection of how much I dislike any and all forms of pain (can't even handle the prick of a needle) or maybe it's simply because my mind has never experienced the pain of falling from so high, so it can't recreate the circumstance.

I also have dreams of places that are not real. Fictional worlds, created in my mind to ease stress or anxiety. Sometimes it's all about fantasy and other times it's a reflection of what I wish life was like. In all these occurrences it always ends up a lucid dream. I can always tell it's not real but I go about it anyway, changing things here an there as anyone would.

I wouldn't say that running away is a common theme for people but then again, I'm only one person. I can understand many people want to run from life but I just can't see that effecting someone's dreams as much as it would seem. We all know deep down that running won't solve anything, right? If I'm correct it's the subconscious that dictates what we dream, so that knowledge would, in theory, negate the effects of that specific theme. But I'm just getting ahead of myself now. I'm no dream doctor so anything I say is purely theoretical, and has no reflection of how the mind really works.

I dream quite often about being a superhero XD.  It's either Superman or Spiderman.  I'm actually chuckling at myself for typing this 'cause it seem so ridiculous, although it's seriously cool when I do dream about flying or swinging around.

For me, my dream themes are really random. Like when I'm sleeping in the weekend, I would randomly dream that I'm going through a horrible school day. lol. And in other random dreams I have, I would be chased by a lion and its scary... lol. So my dream themes are all random. XD

I normally don't have a recurring dream theme but whenever I do, it's usually me helping from superheroes to the NCIS team capture bad guys. :/

falling/flying/running = growing

I used to have the same recurring nightmares until I was about 14 years old. I'm so glad I don't have the same nightmares because they were horrible and it was always the same place.. I was on the couch or the bed. Oh and I have had many dreams of flying. I think it's just something I have always wanted to do.. and I end up having dreams about it. It gets pretty interesting sometimes.

Does anyone else here have ever had the feeling of actual physical pain in their dreams, then waking up to it to find it was only imaginary and still feeling the after effects of the pain?

Yes, I used to dream about flying above the earth or escaping "bad guys", but now I usually dream about real life and about real things happening to me. Last night I dreamed that my math exam, which I took weeks ago, had not yet been taken and I wasn't prepared for it. It's weird, because I didn't care about my exams that much this time around.
