Hey everyone, I am a huge kingdom hearts fan, I love the story so much and I was overjoyed to find out they are making kingdom hearts 3. But then I find out that I really know nothing about the plot. I've played kingdom hearts 1 and 2 and beat them about a 100 times and I love that story line but I haven't played any other game and I don't have the kind of time or money to play the rest on platforms I don't have. So can any die hard kingdom hearts fan tell me all the details I need to know from the other games to fully understand the universe, so I can really appreciate and know everything on the third one.
Even if you don't know everything just a little bit of info that you know would be great!
Thanks!

Wait. You have played Kingdom Hearts II without playing Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. If that is the case, you must have been pretty confused about quite a few things, since Chain of Memories was what started the events of Kingdom Hearts II. Technically, Kingdom Hearts II is the 3rd one in the series. They were a trilogy story.

tyler1417 : Hi Tyler! I was just writing a review for KH1 and
happened to see this thread, and no one answered you! I am a HUGE Kingdom
Hearts fan and am willing to answer any questions you have about the series.
But for now, I'll give you a quick rundown through each of the games.

Kingdom Hearts 1-
You already know this one. Sora receives
the Keyblade, and needs to lock the keyhole in every world to keep it from
disappearing into darkness. The villains in each world are trying to work
together so all the worlds will fall to their feet. Along with that, they try
to take the 7 Princesses of Heart to open the final door which will release a
mass of Heartless to all the worlds, which will pretty much mean the end of
worlds. Behind this little group of villains is Ansem, (or so we are led to
believe). Ansem is the guy who studied the heartless and tried to understand
the meaning of everything that was happening. Sora defeats each of the villains
and finally weakens a desperate Ansem who asks Kingdom Hearts to give him
supreme darkness. Unfortunately for him, Kingdom Hearts was light and
obliterated him. Sora finally finds Kairi who gets sent back to the islands,
and Sora stays behind to continue his search for King Mickey and Riku.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories-
This one immediately follows Kingdom Hearts 1. You see Sora walking down the meadow path at night and he finds a stranger in a black coat. He tells Sora that there is a place up ahead where to find is to lose, and to lose is to find. Sora, Donald and Goofy find this strange place where the stranger tells them it is called Castle Oblivion. He dashes through Sora, scanning his memories, and with them, creates a card. He gives the card to Sora and tells him to hold it up to the big door behind him, then disappears. Sora does so and finds himself in Traverse Town. The people there don't know him, but they know his name and he gives a warm feeling in their hearts. Aerith says that whatever Sora is going through must be true because of all these strange happenings. Just as Sora defeats the boss of Traverse Town (can you take a guess what it was?) they all say goodbye and Aerith stays behind to tell him to be careful. Sometimes, your memories may lie to you, and disappears. Sora continues on up the castle going through all the worlds from KH1. As he moves up, he meets more of the Organization. He finds Axel, Larxene, and Vexen. He also comes across Riku who ends up fighting him many times. However, Riku was just a puppet made by Vexen to mess with Sora even more. This backfires on him as Sora tries to tell him that he may be fake, but the fact that they are still friends is real. Sora also begins to remember another friend he had at the islands. He could never place her name, until he fights Larxene a second time. A pendant drops from his pocket and Larxene taunts him with it. Testing him trying to get him to remember his other friend. She takes the pendant and threatens to crush it. Sora remembers her name, Namine, and swats it out of her hands. Thus my favorite line, "Namine gave this to me! It's very important to me!" "Oh really? Cause five seconds ago you didn't even know what it was!" Upon remembering Namine, he forgets all about Kairi. His newly found drive pushes him further up the castle where he desperately tries to find Namine. The original stranger returns at the top of the castle, who happens to be Marluxia, and they end up fighting. Sora destroys Marluxia and finds Namine. She tells him that everything he remembers about her is a lie. The Organization forced her to pick apart his memories, and place false ones there. Their plan backfired however. Sora's drive to rescue a friend destroyed them. She says she can either leave it as it was, or remember the other girl who is truly important to him. He struggles to remember, her name, and just before the giant egg closes on him, he shouts "Kairi!" and that's the end of Sora's story.
Riku's story isn't much important, other than just a bonus for beating Sora's story. Its about Riku waking up from the realm of darkness, and coming in at the very bottom of castle oblivion. He starts from the basement working his way up and out. He finds some of the other organization members and fights his way through. As he goes through the worlds, his only real friend is King Mickey, who leads him through the castle with his voice. While he fights through Castle Oblivion, he is also fighting off the darkness that still resides in him. He finds that Ansem is still trying to control him from the inside. He successfully fights off Ansem, but is thrown into darkness. Mickey comes in and helps him out, and they walk out of Castle Oblivion together. There he meets Diz and Diz asks him to take one of two roads. The one to Light, or the one to Darkness. There the famous lines are heard. "I'll take the middle road." "You mean the one to twilight and nightfall?" "No, the road to dawn." Ending Chain of Memories.

Kingdom Hearts 2:
Another one you already know. Roxas starts out looking for his meaning in life when strange things begin happening to him. He learns he used to be a part of a secret organization, until Namine talks him into returning to Sora. Sora awakens completely unaware of what happened in Chain of Memories, and continues his journey to find Riku. Along his journey he realizes there is a new group of enemies to worry about, Organization XIII. He also finds out that Kairi got dragged back into this mess and now has two friends to worry about again. He successfully takes out the rest of the Organization and defeats Xemnas. Sora gets both Riku and Kairi together at The World That Never Was, and successfully gets all three of them back to the islands until the day they are needed again. Which is none too soon when Sora receives a letter from King Mickey.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days:
This isn't a too story important game other than the year that Roxas spent in the Organization. After Roxas joins the Organization, a new member comes in a week after him. Her name is Xion. She looks similar to young Kairi, but with black hair. The two become close and it turns out she can wield a keyblade too. The two of them and Axel begin hanging out at the top of the Train station clock tower everyday after their missions. As things progress, the three become distant. Axel has to go to Castle Oblivion to test the Keyblade wielder there (Sora, this one joints with Chain of Memories). Roxas learns that everyone who was sent to CO got wiped out, and Roxas become depressed for a time. Then Axel appears one day and they begin hanging out again. Axel however knows something about Xion that no one else does except for Siax and Xemnas himself. Xion runs away after learning her true identity from Riku, and Roxas tries to find her. He is tasked with destroying a fake in an Organization XIII coat. He fights the stranger but it gets away. He finds it again in Twilight town, but it turns out this one is Xion. Just as he is trying to get Xion to come back, she tries to run. Axel appears ready to fight. He is ready to take her back, conscious or not. The two begin fighting but Roxas cant stand seeing his two friends fight. He yells for them to stop and Xion hesitates for a split second, in which Axel without stopping at all, knocks her unconscious. He disappears before Roxas can say anything. She is held captive for a time until deemed ready for duty again. Roxas visits her now and then but she continues sleeping. Xemnas tells Siax to get everything set up for the final battle, in which involves some magic devices that enhances Xion's power. As it turns out, she is nothing but a puppet made by the organization to copy Roxas' powers, so they can have a keyblade wielder that obeys their every word without hesitation. However, it is weakening Roxas, so Xemnas orders everything to be set up so Roxas and Xion fight to the death. Either Roxas will prevail, or Xion. Either way, they still have a Keyblade wielder. Roxas defeats Xion and as she fades away, every one's memory of her begins to fade. Xion tries to tell him not to let Xemnas have Kingdom Hearts. But he has a hard time focusing until she is finally ready to pass. She disappears and Roxas turns back to the World That Never Was for revenge. Before he gets to the castle though, he is confronted by Riku. Riku tries to get him back so he can return Roxas to Sora, but Roxas has such a strong sense of self, that he denies everything Riku says. Roxas beats Riku time and time again, so Riku turns to the only thing he can do to save Sora. He releases all the dark power in his heart, turning him into a spitting image of Xehanort's Heartless, and crushes Roxas. Roxas passes out and they reprogram his memory. Thus beginning KH2.

I'll make another reply later continuing the rest of the story for Birth by Sleep, Coded, and Dream Drop Distance if you're still interested. Getting kind of late so I'll make another reply tomorrow. Hope you like it!
