Contagion Movie and Follow up Essay

Beth Emhoff dies from a flu when she returns from Hong Kong. Her young son dies the same day from the same flu. Her husband Mitch turns out to be immune then the CDC keeps him in containment until they find out why so many people are dying and he is immune. The flu turns out to be MEV-1 and it has DNA from both pigs and bats. The CDC is trying to find a cure while millions are dying all around the world. Social order breaks down because of the virus and many governments fall because no one is listening to their plans. The movie is much like the Black Death in Europe in 1348-1350 CE killing 75-200 million people when a plague breaks out and social order collapses and no one trusts anyone anymore and everyone hides in their homes until it’s over. So when MEV-1 is over are we going to have a Renaissance all over the world?  After this is spoilers so I’m not going to talk about it but at the very end of the movie it shows the cause of the spread of the virus. It starts with a bulldozer knocking over a tree that has fruit bats in it one bat that has the developing virus flies off and goes to a banana tree grabs a piece of banana then flies to a barn in a pig farm to eat it. The bat drops the banana and then the pigs eat it so now the pigs have the virus. The pigs get sold away and they get killed by the butcher and he doesn’t wash his hands. The butcher meets Beth and shakes hands with her and now she has the virus on her hands but she isn’t infected yet that’s not until she picks up a peanut and eats it.
