I prefer the red mage, because it can do decent close combat damage, plus it has some awesome spells and is quite adaptable. I like teams made up of the three mage classes plus a fighter class. It brings balance to your teams end of the fight. I'm actually playing FF 1 right now, and that kind of team is working pretty well.

The Black Mage for sure,but if I had a second option I would choose the Monk because yeah there extremely weak in the beginning but somewhere near Lv 50 or so they become so strong they don't need gloves or gauntlets.
