In the Castlevania fandom, there are three games in the series that constantly compete for the title of best "old-school" entry in the Belmonts' saga - Super Castlevania IV, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and Castlevania: Dracula X/Vampire's Kiss/Rondo Of Blood. Each one has it's own differences and advantages:

  • Castlevania III (1989/1990/1992): Branching paths after the stages. Partners that assist you in the stages and affect the ending slightly. Old-school gameplay, 45º jumps and limited whipping abilities. Pushes the NES to it's limits, especially in the Japanese version.

  • Super Castlevania IV (1991): Drastically reworked remake of the first CV. Darker and bleaker tone. Impressive Mode-7 effects. Multi-directional whipping at any moment, with whip spinning. Extensive stages, and lots of 'em.

  • Dracula X/Rondo Of Blood/Vampire's Kiss (1993/1994): Branching paths in the stages, leading to multiple secret stages, endings and a secret character. Diagonal whipping only when jumping. Special attacks with sub-weapons (Item Crash). Fantastic soundtrack (Bloodlines is my favorite Castlevania song ever). Impressive animation and detail. Released on the PC Engine SUPER CD-ROM/TurboDuo in 1993, got an inferior SNES port in 1994 (which was the only one released outside of Japan).

So, which game of these three are the apex of old-school Castlevania for you? In my opinion, it's Dracula X.

You're missing quite a lot of games there. Such as the GameBoy games, Castlevania Chronicles, the original Castlevania. For the old school ones, my favourite is Rondo of Blood.

I like the Castlevania series, but I missed out on a lot of the games. I'm familiar with Castlevania II, the N64 versions (both of them), and now since the original game was ported to the gameboy Advance I got to play that game. Since this site has a lot of the old school Castlevania games I can catch up on what I've been missing. To bad it doesn't have Symphony of the Night I heard that game was awesome.

I'm going to have to go with Super Castlevania IV. For how early it came out in the SNES' lifespan, it is very impressive. It's just a step above 3 in my eyes. I do think 3 is clearly the best of the NES games though.
