We're having our first kid in January if everything goes well.

Who has kids and what do you suggest we do?  What should we avoid doing?

Who has any ideas on what I should teach my kid when they're born?  

We don't know if it's a boy or girl yet but we find out in a few weeks.

Yeah congrats im 12 but a kid knows what a kid likes i suggest teaching the kid some math and writing and reading befour school help me alot and try to keep them active as can be and if its a boy well don't let him play GTA when he's 5 i did nothin big but i woulden't and mybye if he likes video games mario and zelda and pokemon usaly kids like lego so yeah some sugestions

You should teach it discipline but just don't ruin your kids life with punishment. Give some fun time and some serious time. That's the advice my mom gave me (about...5-6 years ago. Seriously? I'm 10. I don't really know much about this stuff). I tried to help out. I hope that you think that I at least tried to help.
Anyway,

I must say, though I never plan to have children, if I did, I would use the techniques "supernanny" uses. I fing the show wasn't simly a gimicy reality show, but actually made a lot of sense (better than other nanny shows). I would watch a couple of seasons of "supernanny" if I were you.

Teach the child the value of hard work and honesty, those two qualities will make him/her a very very succesful person.
