I think Sonic would because he has an actual ability without the aid of a power up ( he is fast ) , while Mario does not really have any special abilities.

It would depend on what kind of fight they were in. If it was a Race or some form of battle that requires speed (Like a hamster wheel challenge) then Sonic would win hands down. If it was a battle for style points then Mario would win for sheer popularity. In hand to hand combat... it's questionable.
