I still don't understand why people think it's so expensive to eat healthy.  I know there are various definitions of 'healthy', but generally speaking... it's not costly at all. My husband is one of those people that thinks it's a financial burden, and it causes me some (very slight) distress.  Do people automatically assume you're speaking about organic foods when you say 'healthy'. Organic food stores (at least, the ones I've seen) are expensive, yes... but they aren't the only healthy options out there, either.

Dfsg : Potato-leek soup sounds amazing. My parents never taught me to cook, and I've always regretted that. However, my husband got me a cooking course as a Christmas gift, so I'm eager to try it out!  Also, our city doesn't have a local community garden and I don't have more than 20 square feet of porch on my apartment.  I saw this great idea I'm going to try though, in which you cut soda bottles lengthwise, poke some holes on both ends, and hang the bottles on some wire (stacked).  I can hang that off my porch wall and grow some stuff in it, so I'm collecting 2 liters and excited to try it!

What is the price of keeping a community garden?  It sounds totally cool and I've never met anyone that actually does it.

Well I can see where one would think eating healthy would be expensive .. especially if you are going to health food places to get your food. I disagree in general with that tho because if you are really set on eating healthy then there is always a way to get it done and usually fairly cheap. Collect coupons for the grocery stores you go to and make sure to go to more than one so you have a big variety of coupons ( more options for stuff to buy and less looking you have to do for outside sources ). I like to eat a bit healthy off and on but I am by no means a health food junkie ( as is attested by my slightly bulging belly of course ). Another source I like to use a lot is Farmer's Markets. You can usually get plenty of fresh fruits and veggies from them at reasonable prices ( especially if you don't mind taking the time to haggle a bit over the price ) because they are always interested in getting repeat customers that they can count on coming back to them. Also at some markets I have seen freshly butchered and wrapped meats as well from animals they raise on the farms ... these you'd have to know your store prices well but again with some haggling you can usually get a decent deal.
Or if worst comes to worst and you feel adventurous you can always grow your own food in a small garden and raise a few livestock of your own for food ( like chickens, goats, etc... ). You'll have ready food sources and this will also cut down on the amount of food you have to buy week to week normally. :O)

Well, I can afford to eat healthy, because the reason why, I do work, but the food does get a little more expensive to buy than unhealthy stuff. For me, everything to my point of view is just food, no matter if it's healthy or not, I just buy the food anyways.

If by healthy you mean not eating anything industrial and go for the "all natural" (bio milk, free-range eggs, grass-fed beef), then yes it can be very expensive.

However, if you merely want to eat "healthier" than the usual US diet, then it's actually quite affordable. Cutting carbs will save money AND shelf space. Switching to full-fat products like meat and dairy is either the same price of slightly cheaper. Also, if your local grocery sells in bulk, you can save a ton of money (and keep freshness) for nuts, spices, flours...

Eating Healthy is more affordable then people think sometimes, but Milk and meat aren't sadly. Buying the full fat products would be cheaper for most part. Cutting carbs does save money like janus said below me.

Eating healthy can be a little expensive. May need your calculator, study your grocery list, and know where to look. I admit some healthy foods cost a little much or not, and some unhealthy foods cost a little much or not I've noticed that. I can see why some people may thinks its expensive to eat healthy. Like buying a box of fish with 5 pieces of fish may cost 5 or 7 dollars. But getting a pizza could cost 3 or 4 bucks. Buying a bag of chicken regular or boneless 5 to 7 dollars. But getting some bologna or hot dogs could cost you maybe 2 bucks. I can see why some people would get that mixed up. Just have to check or study the prices of the food item that may be cheaper and fit your taste. Its going to take some patience! Either at your favorite grocery store or the grocery store that has to best prices for you.

See I whole heartedly disagree. If you know how to cook things, you can eat cheaply no problem. Instead of buying things that come in a box, purchase things that are fresh in smaller amounts. The problem is that people are us usually to lazy to prepare, and cook a meal. That's where the problem lies.
