The first one is definitely the best, because it established all of the classic Zelda elements and executed them perfectly. The second one is okay, but for me, it just strays a bit too far from the established formula, plus the things I had to do were always unclear to me.

Zelda II is stupid difficult. I tried to like it but in the end just couldn't get into it. The original is hard too but I managed to beat both quest and got everything so at least I know it's not unreasonable. Besides, it was the first game of its kind and Zelda II was just another platformer. Nothing special.

Some advice on handling the Knights in Zelda 2, if you jump and swing your sword as you reach their head then duck as soon as you land, it will drag the sword through them and almost guarentee a hit. Dark Link is easy if you just duck down and keep swinging your sword.
