It's a measure of how much you contributed to vizzed.
This includes stuff like posting, making game reviews, and lots of other things. (go to your profile then click on your cp counter to see more options)
If you get a lot of cp you'll have a better chance at becoming rgr staff.
There isn't really any other point to it.

Also don't forget that the higher your CP the more Viz you make for regular actions. This is copied and pasted right from the stats of your CP and Viz.

Below are all the ways you can earn Contribution Points

Points multiplier:

You can earn more CP & Viz per an action depending on your total CP

100+ Contribution Points :: CP & Viz * 1.25

1000+ Contribution Points :: CP & Viz * 1.5

10000+ Contribution Points :: CP & Viz * 1.75

100000+ Contribution Points :: CP & Viz * 2

Multiplier doesn't include 'Viz Transfer' or 'Donation'

So there is actually an OK reason to get them in my opinion.
