i would say start with ffiii for ds its what me and 2 of my friends started with sand now all of us love the series because its a good start or possicly vii if you dont have a ds

I just started with FF XII. That was the newest one out and I didn't want to get behind, even though I now still don't know much about what people are talking about when they speak of previous ones. I'm not much of a game player, so FF XII is fun. It's not hard to get back into the swing of things when you've been away for a while and it starts out with a play tutorial (which some don't have). Pick one that starts out with a play tutuorial or else it's much harder.

I would recomend final fantasy crisis core for psp then play number 7 for clouds storie and so on from there.

I would either start out with IV, IX, or X. All of them were really good without being incredibly difficult and all of them had very good plots and great character development. However, IV on the DS, or PSX is crazy hard. If you want, you can do IX or X but IV has the classic fantasy feel with minimal to no grinding and a constant flow of different characters in your party. Either way, it is your choice. Another choice would be VI, but the final boss is on the easy side, and the story is very dark. Either one of the four should be a great start to the series.
