To me the most useful item in mario is the gaint super mushroom because it lets you breeze through the stage with ease and the most useless power item is the toonikie leaf because its the exact same as the feather power item except you cant fly nor glide.

Most usefull: Tanooki Leaf, it let's you fly in the 2d games, hover in the air, attack with your tail and in 3d land can make you a stone. In other words: really helpfull.

Most useless: Mega Mushroom, okay, it lets you destroy everything but it makes you lose your power like a fire flower and turns you back to normal, it only lasts for a little bit and most professional Mario players really don't need it. In other words: unnecessary.

I would say the most useful is Tanooki. It's like the raccoon but better. Plus, nobody can argue with immortality on demand.

Useless is the mini mushroom since, like FF said about the mega mushroom, it removes all other powerups, and this one prevents any kills and you die in one hit.
