I guess that I know lots of pointless things, so this thread is a good idea for me to do. So, basically, I'm going to post 3 (or more, if I feel up to it) facts twice a week for each day's subject, for a total of 6 random facts each week. Please note that some of these facts I have searched for on the internet, so it's not purely my intelligence. Also note that I am not copying any articles I find. So, yeah. I hope you enjoy the thread!

Day 2
Days 3 and 4

Day 1 - Armadillos
1. So, lots of people think that all Armadillo species roll up into a ball. Not true. There is one 1 species that can. And, guess what? Contrary to very popular belief, it isn't the 9-Banded Armadillo (also known as the Long-Nosed Armadillo). It's actually the 3-Banded Armadillo. I'm guessing that it's because they have to bend their bands a little to roll up into a ball, and it's too hard for a 9-Banded Armadillo to do it because they have more bands, but I'm not entirely sure.

2. 9-Banded Armadillos always give birth to 4. Never more. Never less. Why, though? Each armadillo probably mates for different amounts of times, right? So why should they always give birth to 4? I have no idea. And, get this. They all develop from the same egg (the kind of egg mammals get), and even the same placenta, so they are always identical quadruplets. Isn't that wacky?

3. Armadillos like the swim. According to armadillo-online.org, they are also very good swimmers. They can hold their breath for a pretty long time - about 5 minutes. Their shell is really heavy for them, so they can't float or swim very easily. How do they solve this? They gulp tons of air into their intestines and stomach to help them be more buoyant. That's awesome, right?

Fact 1 Armadillos are the only animal besides humans that can get leprosy.
Fact 2 Armadillos are one of the few animals who consume fire ants as part of their diet. Such an ability can make armadillos very beneficial to humans.
Fact 3 Armadillos can be housebroken
Fact 4 Armadillos have a very low need of oxygen. Even when burrowing they can stop breathing for 6 minutes by storing air in the trachea and wide bronchus.
Hope you enjoyed the armadillo facts =)

TheFadedWarrior : Well that was an interesting read... I never knew or cared that much for Armadillos most probably due to the fact that they don't reside here in Britain. Either way I'm pretty sure that this obscure piece of knowledge may come in handy one day.. More than likely in some general knowledge quiz at the local pub.

Day 2 - Money
1. Zimbabwean dollars are the stupidest thing ever. No, that wasn't meant to be racist. They seriously are. They issued a 100,000,000,000,000 (100 trillion) Zimbabwean Dollar (Z$), and guess what? It was only worth about 5 USD! So, you know what that means? 1 USD is equal to 362 Z$. Yeah, you read that right. That means that there 36,100 Zimbabwean cents in 1 USD. Yeah, that's not cool.

2. People have been richer than Bill Gates. Yeah, it's been around for awhile that Warren Buffet and, at least for awhile, the president of Telemundo have been a lot more wealthy than Bill. However, there has been a family called the Rothschilds that, together, had a TON of money. They had an estimated hundreds of billions, or, apparently, an estimated 1 trillion+ USD. In case you're not very smart, that's a lot of money.

3. People used to use Rai Stones as currency. You know what those are? They're massive, up to 8 feet tall, stones with holes in the middle (giant stone donut?).
Believe it or not, this information is actually pretty reliable... yeah.  People had to move (at least) 1,000 lb. stones for currency. I mean, seriously, look at this bugger!

Oh, and by the way, guys, feel free to add more facts to each of my subjects, like GenesisJunkie did with my armadillo fact-list.

Money - Coins When the US mint began production for coins in 1792, they minted a Half Cent ($.005), a Cent ($.01), a Half Dimse ($.05), a Dimse ($.1), a Quarter Dollar ($.25), a Half Dollar ($.5), a Dollar ($1), a Quarter Eagle ($2.50), a Half Eagle ($5), and an Eagle ($10). The Penny and Half Penny were Copper, the Half Dime, Dime, Quarter Dollar, Half Dollar, and Dollar were Silver, and the Quarter Eagle, Half Eagle, and Eagle were Gold.
The first one to go was the Half Cent, in 1857. Next, mints stopped producing Quarter Eagles and Half Eagles in 1929. Finally, the mint stopped producing Eagles in 1933.
Some other coins were made that were eventually discontinued later on in the Mints life. There were the Two Cent Piece ($.02), the Three Cent Piece ($.03), the Twenty Cent Piece ($.2), the Three Dollar Piece ($3), and The Union ($50). There were some un-official coins too, like the Mill ($.001), and the Stella ($4).
Other coins had name changes, but the denominations stayed the same. The Half Dime was changed to a Nickel, the Cent was changed to the Penny, and the Dimse was changed to the Dime. There were also some coins with the same denomination's, but with different names. A few examples are the Large Cent and Steel Cent ($.01) and the Large Size Dollar and Gold Dollar ($1).
That is a brief history of coins in the USA

Sorry I didn't do it last week. I got really busy. I apologize, but I am not going to make up for last week. Now I have to do 2 days work before tomorrow to finish this week.

Week 2/Days 3 & 4 - (Living) Marine Life and Teeth
Day 3
1. The loudest animal living today is... drum roll, please... a shrimp! That's right, the Tiger Pistol Shrimp is the loudest living animal, as it can make sounds up to about 200 decibels (the average jet engine is about 140 dB). The shape of its claws/pincers make it so a sound happens when they clamp shut. They close their claws/pincers so hard and fast, that they make really, really loud noises. They use this ability to their advantage so they can knock out their prey using the noise. This "weapon" is sometimes called a "sonic pistol."
2. The smallest living octopus is pretty small. Measuring in at 0.6 inches (1.5 cm) in length and 1 gram (0.035 oz.), the Octopus Wolfi is the smallest known living octopus (and probably the smallest known octopus of all time). You could probably fit at least 4 of them on your hand at one time, though it really depends on how big your hand is. Here's a picture.
3. There's this disgusting fish species known as Pacific Hagfish that live on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Why are they disgusting? First of all, they look like this. Then there's the fact that they like to go inside of dead fish and eat them. But other than the gross stuff, they're actually pretty weird. They are the only known animals to have a skull but no vertebral column (the thing that connects your skull to the rest of your body), and they don't even have a jaw, so I'm wondering how they eat the fish. They are also known as "living fossils" because they are very similar to prehistoric Hagfish.

Day 4
1. This is what a skull looks like before the permanent teeth grow in. In my opinion, it looks really weird and its also weird to think that you were born with pockets with teeth inside of them.
2. There was a prehistoric fish known as the Conodont that had really, really sharp teeth. They were small, tubular (tube-shaped) fish that I don't think even needed the teeth. I mean, imagine a thick noodle. Now imagine it having swords as teeth. Why would it need those? Now get this - They don't even have a jaw! I found a picture of Conodont teeth that you might enjoy here.
3. You should note that this is about living marine life, so it could fit in both of this week's sections, but the living marine life section was easy to do. There is a living fish known as a Dragonfish that you might have heard of. Off of the teeth subject for a little bit, they have a string attached to their chin that attracts their prey, sort of like an Anglerfish. The teeth part about them is that, yes, they have really sharp teeth, but they also have that teeth on their tongue. So, I guess, they can chew on them and lick them at the same without biting on its tongue? But I still don't really see a point to their tongue.

There you go. This took me a long time to write, so you better read it or else I'll have to eat you.
