For over 500 years, the last true Romans were suppressed and burdened with a Turkish Yolk of Oppression. The Rise of Golden Dawn in Greece, smouldering Serbian revanchists and the general anti-Turkish sentiment throughout the Balkans seems to be an omen of a unified Balkan Commonwealth to act as a bulwark against rising EU economic and political influence.  In light of the bank levies imposed in Cyprus, there might be several nations eager to get out of the Euro and the EU in favor of more independent arrangements.  The major problem in the Balkans is that the several nationalities have strong independence streaks.  The various Balkan Wars before WWI, the divided states in both World Wars, the Yugoslav civil war, are examples of this rivalry.  Conversely all these places have a united history in the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire and Chalcedonean Orthodox Church.  As people united in history and culture they have a lot to work with in forging a new block of economic and political leverage.

The 'true' romans were from rome. everything else was just their empire.
thethey did give citizenship to many non romans and they were then romansromans, however thats only applicable as long as they were subjects of rome. both sides agreed to the split. the byzantine pire was merely an off shoot of its roman origins, and half its lands and subjects were still, in effect conquered.
Serbia, greece etc are all pro eu. greeks had 2 elections. the first was inconclusive. upon the results, and being informed that not accepting ththe bailout conditions would potentialy mean they wouldnt be able to continue using the euro, enough changed their vote that pro eu partys gained a majority. opinion polls show most greeks want to remain in the eu and single currency, theyre just pissed they have to pay for someone elses mistakes.
half these small balkan states hate each other too. and they have a common turkish history too, sso there are muslims there too, lets throw that into the divisive tension mix too.
almost any country would kill to get free trade with the eu, for eastern and balkan europe it is a potential financial gold mine for them. even countrys like libya and morroco have attempted to join, and turkey is still trying to join.
it has quite a nice effect too, they are improving their human rights, relations with europe, and national structure to try to adhere to the membership requirement.
being part of the eu is kind of like being part of a 2nd country, or a start to a global citizen, covering most of europe. open borders, free trade, standardised mathematics and systems, equal rights in any member country. the fact I could go and live in germany tomorrow, on a whim, is pretty cool.

To answer to the question, I seriously doubt it. What kind of commonwealth can countries who cant handle even their own finances make?

These nationalist fools like the golden dawn can do all their little duck marches and little-Hitler speeches all they want but they cant build anything. It is nothing but populist foolishness with nothing to back it up. They just make the whole mess worse.

But sure. All these countries should get out of Eu and euro and pay for their own damn mess and see to which state of stone age that will lead them. The countries who actually did not become tax paradise for the Russian mob like Cyprus or just lived on borrowed money like Greece should not be helped by the money of tax payers from countries who actually managed to have steady economy and managed to finance their own economical crises.

They can call it a New Rome or the new Shire or Sugartop mountain for all I care when they are eating their own filth when all their rich people have gone with their money to somewhere else.

The whole concept of empires in first world countries have been dead since WWII it's unlikely anything major could happen.
Finance will always be a problem.

thenumberone :

Actually, Golden Dawn has presented a plan that is rather ambitious focusing on resolving the Cyprus issue and working toward the development of the resources in the Aegean Sea, which is believed to have substantial mineral and energy resources.  Of course, there is a strong dose xenophobia, but when you consider there is only 7,000,000 Greeks and the history of the Turkish Yolk, one can understand the vocal concerns about undocumented immigration.
